Volleyball: Lady Hawks in three-way tie for first

Published: Tuesday, October 9, 2012 4:37 PM CDT
On Sept. 21, Hebron's volleyball team made a statement in District 5-5A competition when the Lady Hawks upset defending state champ Coppell.

Tuesday, Hebron had a chance to complete a season sweep of the Cowgirls (results not available as of press time) and put itself in position to claim control of the race for the district title.

But Hebron head coach Karin Keeney is expecting an improved performance from the Cowgirls and isn't concerned with a district title at this point.

"It's a big match and we're going to get a better effort from them, I'm sure of it," she said. "We didn't see the real Coppell last time. It was their Homecoming night and they had some distractions and we took advantage. So I'm expecting them to be much better tonight.

"I guess technically it is for first place in district but we don't look at it like that. We just want to stay near the top of the district because we know who we are going to play in the first round if we don't."

Keeney was referring to a potential bi-district matchup against an upstart Colleyville Heritage team that is currently first in the District 6-5A standings.

The Lady Hawks are able to start talking playoffs after creating separation in the standings last week with wins last Tuesday over Lewisville (25-16, 25-5, 25-15) and Friday against Marcus (25-6, 25-17, 25-7).

As the second half of district play begins, Hebron (4-1), Coppell (4-1) and Flower Mound (4-1) sit comfortably ahead of the Lady Marauders (2-3), Lady Farmers (1-4) and Denton Ryan (0-5).

"We showed up well against Marcus," Keeney said. "We came out very aggressively; offense, defense and serving. It was the whole works and that was something we've really been working hard on. We've been focusing on getting rid of the hills and valleys but last week we didn't have very many lulls."

As a team against Marcus, Hebron had eight aces against just two service errors, while the team was above its passing percentage goal in two of the three sets.

The Lady Hawks also had two hitters in double figures (Loren Williams and Micaela Spann), one short of their goal.

"When the ball isn't coming back as much and it is only a three-set match, that's a little tougher to achieve," Keeney said. "But I don't think that was a true representation of what Marcus has. I think we'll see a better effort from them when we play at their place."

Hebron continues at 6:30 p.m. Friday when it hosts Ryan.

"Our goal is to stay competitive for the next round and stay up top," Keeney said. "The second half is going to be much tougher because everyone has game film now. We're excited to be 4-1 after the first half. I wish it could have been 5-0, but I'm happy with the first round of district we had."
