Boys basketball: Hebron opens playoffs riding win streak, soccer teams continue
By Justin Thomas, jthomas@starlocalnews.com
Perhaps the hottest team in the state of Texas got its Class 5A playoff run under way Tuesday when the District 5-5A champion Hebron Hawks opened in the bi-district round against Euless Trinity.
Hebron was coming off a perfect run through district play and hasn't lost since dropping consecutive contests to DeSoto and Richardson Berkner (both state-ranked as well) Nov. 16 at the Pasadena Texas Invitational.
Since then, the Hawks have rattled off 30 consecutive victories and have risen to the No. 2 in the state according to the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.
Ridge Shipley led the way with 14 points, while Jeff Hicks had 10. Overall, 10 players scored for the Hawks.
The last two LISD teams to finish the district regular season unbeaten went on to win state titles (Marcus in 2011-12).
Girls soccer: Lady Hawks crank up defense
Hebron's girls soccer team bounced back from its district-opening loss against nationally-ranked Coppell by notching a pair of shutouts during the past week.
The Lady Hawks (ranked No. 21 in the nation by the Elite Soccer Report) pulled to .500 by getting past Denton Ryan, 2-0, before blanking Flower Mound on the road Friday, 3-0.
Stefani Doyle, Ellen Starnes and Chelsee Washington found the back of the net against the Lady Jaguars, while Washington and Evan Pipkin did the damage in the victory over the Lady Raiders.
More state-ranked opponents are on the docket next week when Hebron travels to face Marcus.
Boys soccer: Hawks top Jags
Connor Driscoll, Paul Luna and Armando Perez each netted goals Friday as Hebron's boys soccer team earned its first District 5-5A soccer win with a 3-1 margin over Flower Mound.
The Hawks were coming off a 2-2 draw last Tuesday against Denton Ryan and continued Tuesday at Lewisville (results not available as of press time).
