Girls soccer: Cowgirls can't slow Marcus
By Justin Thomas, jthomas@starlocalnews.com
A short-handed Coppell girls soccer team received a rude awakening Friday when the Cowgirls (ranked No. 14 in the nation by the Elite Soccer Report) were drilled by Marcus (No. 8), 8-0.
Coppell entered the match ranked fourth, while Marcus entered at 10.
"That wasn't a fun game for anyone," said Chris Stricker, Coppell head coach. "We had a couple of players out and I think that put a little doubt in our mind right from the start."
"They were primarily off our mistakes, too," Stricker added. "It was either bad clearances or poor communication. We had three mistakes that led to three shots and three goals."
The Lady Marauders didn't stop there, however, tacking on two more before halftime.
"We had only given up three goals all season before that, so the girls were a little shocked," Stricker said.
Following a series of close contests, Stricker was able to utilize the bench in the loss.
Katelyn Mountjoy, Natalie Schmutz and Dani Murphy each scored a pair of goals, while Courtney Forte and Jamie Pugh also found the back of the net.
"Hopefully it motivates us to get back out there," Stricker said. "We need to refocus because we need to win our next two matches and finish the first half of district strong. If we can get our next two, we'll be 4-1 and if you told me at the beginning of district that would be our record at the halfway point, I would have taken it in a heartbeat in this district."
Coppell was coming off a 1-0 victory last Tuesday against Flower Mound.
"We played unbelievable," Stricker said. "Flower Mound's goalie was outstanding, too. She had some big saves and really kept the match very close."
The Cowgirls finally broke through with 20 minutes remaining on a goal by Jackie Nichols. Sarah King played a big role in creating the score when she challenged Anderson in the air to set up Nichols for the rebound.
"She really competed in the air to make that goal happen," Stricker said. "We needed those grind-it-out type of efforts to win the match and we played very well on defense as well."
Coppell continued Tuesday against Denton Ryan (results not available as of press time) before going on the road Tuesday to face Lewisville.
"I'm proud of how we've been competing," Stricker said. "Hopefully Friday will refocus us for a strong finish."
