Boys soccer: Smith rallies to draw The Colony

A pair of goals from Mauricio Rosas helped Little Elm’s boys get past Newman Smith Feb. 26 in a District 20-4A soccer match, 3-2.
It was the first loss on the resume in district for the Trojans (2-1-2), who are in second place behind Highland Park (3-0-2).
Smith followed with a draw Friday against The Colony, 2-2.
Ellis credited Smith’s 15 seniors with the leadership to not get discouraged by a rough start to non-district.
Now that leadership is paying off and was again on display in the draw against The Colony where the Trojans overcame a 2-0 deficit.
“We fought hard to get the tie,” Ellis said. “Normally, I would have been good with that, but we just had so many chances to go ahead that I was a little disappointed. But I like where the guys are at right now and how they’re competing. We’re making progress, are getting better and are headed in the right direction, it’s just a matter of if we can maintain it.”
Nick Mendoza and Josh Malone scored goals for the Trojans, with the latter coming on a penalty kick.
“Josh is our leading scorer,” Ellis said. “He’s a sneaky kid and can be very deceiving. He’s calm with the ball and stays composed. He really drives our team.”
Against Little Elm, goals were recorded by Mendoza and Edward Valadez.
“We got behind and started off slow but picked it up in the second half,” Ellis said. “Little Elm has some strong forwards, though, and they beat us a couple of times.”
Smith continued Tuesday against Creekview (results not available as of press time) before having a lengthy break and resuming district March 19 against Highland Park.
“I would have liked to be able to keep going because now we have two weeks between matches,” Ellis said. “But it has its positives and negatives and now we can get a little more training in and get healthier.
“The Highland Park match is going to be big. We tied them, 2-2, earlier in the season and both of their goals were on penalty kicks. We had some defensive lapses, but we’re still improving and have had good stretches, too. Over 80 minutes, we are defending well, we just have little slips where we give up some easy ones and we need to eliminate those mistakes.”
