Stephenson reflects on time on council

Published: Tuesday, March 5, 2013 2:59 PM CST
Flower Mound Mayor Pro Tem Kendra Stephenson announced Monday night that she has withdrawn her name for this year’s town council election for Place 1.

Stephenson was elected to the council in 2011 and has served as the mayor pro tem for the last year.

“It has been my honor to work with this council and our wonderful staff to serve the

residents of Flower Mound since 2011,” Stephenson said Monday. “Due to some exciting new career opportunities, and my most important roles of mother and wife, I can no longer dedicate the many hours required to be an effective member of Flower Mound's town council. While this was a difficult decision, it is the best one for my family and Flower Mound.”

Stephenson then threw her support toward Mike Walker, who will face Joy Bowen in the May 11 election.

“I could not leave the race for Place 1, if I did not believe there was a clearly qualified

candidate to occupy my council seat,” Stephenson stated in a press release. “This candidate is Mike Walker. Mike has continually demonstrated his commitment to the town of Flower Mound, and his depth of experience in Urban and Community Planning and investment management will be a huge benefit to the council. Just as important, Mike's approach to decision-making will continue the calm, no drama governing style Flower Mound residents have come to expect over the last year.”

In the statement, Stephenson reflected on her time on the council, which she said has been highlighted by advancements in economic development.

“The last two years have been an exciting time for Flower Mound,” Stephenson stated. “I am proud to say that since the 2012 election, the Town Council has made great strides in achieving all of the goals outlined during my 2011 election campaign. Desirable development has been approved, offering residents great opportunities to eat, shop and play in Flower Mound.

“Residential developments have been approved that will offer increased housing options

to all generations including young professionals, empty nesters and seniors,” Stephenson stated. “Most importantly, the approval of Lakeside DFW last November marks the first step in completing the mixed-use vision first expressed during the 2006 Master Plan Update process. A vibrant mixed-use community will showcase the incredible piece of property adjacent to Lake Grapevine. I am proud to have been a part of the great team that worked to move Flower Mound forward, in a balanced manner, while respecting the history of Flower Mound.”
