McKinney High Marquettes shine during competition season

Showtime Champions 02-09-13
By Ann Spaight
The girls of the McKinney High School Marquettes dance team possess two qualities critical to success in any endeavor: talent and a tenacious work ethic. They leveraged both to their advantage recently at the Showtime DFW Area dance competition on Feb. 9.
The Marquettes were among multiple school and studio dance groups that gathered at R.L. Turner High School in Carrollton for the event. The girls earned individual distinctions as well as high marks in a number of group dance categories on their way to claiming the title of Grand Champion in the Large Team Division. Other titles and recognitions include:
Junior Varsity Marquettes: Grand Champions - JV division; Team Sweepstakes; Judges Award; and Best Pom, Hip-Hop, and Military Routines.
The elite "Illusion" team that is made up of varsity members of the Marquettes, as well as the varsity officers, also attended the MA North Texas Regional Competition the weekend of Feb. 23 at Liberty High School in Frisco. This particular competition is notorious for being extremely competitive and the Marquettes represented the team and school extremely well. Their titles and recognitions include:
Marquette Varsity Officers: Super Sweepstakes; Best Choreography for Open and Lyrical routines; and Best in Class.
Marquette Varsity Illusion Team: Super Sweepstakes; Best Choreography for Lyrical, Kick, Hip-Hop and Open routines; High Point Awards for both Open and Hip-Hop routines; and Outstanding Technique award.
While she is justifiably proud of the way the Marquettes distinguished themselves at both competitions, Neely finds even greater satisfaction in the character her dancers demonstrated in preparing for it.
“The members of both teams displayed class and dedication that would make anyone proud,” she says. “This means way more to me than any trophy that they earn.”
