State again?: Lady Wolverines shoot for return trip to Georgetown

Published: Thursday, March 7, 2013 2:39 PM CST
Next month marks the two-year anniversary of the Wakeland girls soccer team’s Class 4A State Championship against Cedar Park Vista Ridge.

With a heavy group of seniors on this season’s team, the Lady Wolverines are looking to duplicate that success with another run at state.

“Obviously state is always in the back of the girls’ minds,” said Meagan Wilson, Wakeland head coach. “It’s something we’re striving for after getting there two years ago. It’s just not really something we talk about.”

This year, the team has tallied an 18-2-2 mark with a 6-1 record against district counterparts putting Wakeland atop the 18-4A standings.

“They’re playing with some fire right now,” Wilson said.

The team’s most recent win came courtesy of a 4-0 shellacking of Frisco that featured two goals from senior Maddie Lundberg.

“It was a great win for my girls,” Wilson said. “They were hungry and wanted to send a message that they’re ready to go.”

Lundberg is one of six seniors on the team that is bidding for another run at state, joining Lexie Devore, Michaela Moen, Kaylin Peery, Paige Reid and injured defenseman Laura Minor.

“Our seniors are a huge part of our success,” Wilson said. “They’ve been a tremendous part of this team for a long time now.”

Moen, the team’s goalkeeper, racked up her 16th shutout of the season on Tuesday after keeping the Lady Raccoons without a goal. Wilson said strong play from Moen and other Lady Wolverines have helped combat Minor’s season-ending injury after the senior tore her ACL in a Feb. 15 contest against Frisco.

“Every single game you’re learning and building from the momentum that the kids build,” she said.

Wakeland’s only hiccup during district play came Friday with a 1-0 loss to Liberty.

“We had some injuries we were dealing with and that played a factor,” Wilson said. “I have to give a huge hand to Liberty though. They showed up to play that night and they played absolutely fantastic.”

The Lady Wolverines will now look to rebound with a 7:15 p.m. battle at Heritage tonight.

“That’s the fun part of playing in Frisco,” Wilson said. “There’s always a rivalry. The teams want to beat each other so bad.”

Despite the loss, the Lady Wolverines still control their own destiny for the top spot in the district. The team’s 6-1 mark is good for a one-game lead over Liberty with three matches remaining in the regular season.

“With the exception of the Liberty game, we have been playing really well,” Wilson said. “I think that game got our attention a little bit.”

That attention will soon turn to the postseason, where the Lady Wolverines will look to repeat their past success.
