Raider baseball wins three of four in tournament play

Published: Wednesday, March 6, 2013 1:09 AM CST
The Sunnyvale baseball team might have suffered its first loss of the season, but it can still consider its week a success after posting a 3-1 record at the Highway 24 Tournament.

The Raiders, ranked fourth in the Texas High School Coaches Association Class 2A state poll, closed out the event with a 15-4 victory over Cooper on Saturday.

Sunnyvale needed only one inning to put Cooper away, scoring 12 runs in their first at-bat. Cooper actually scored four times in the first inning itself, but Joey Rosato shut the door from there, striking out four in three and two-thirds innings.

Seth Metzger provided much of the damage, with two hits and five runs batted in. Wesley Phillips doubled and drove in two, while Conner Mears added a RBI triple.

Sunnyvale had split its two games on Friday. The Raiders got a challenge for a while, but finally pulled away from Commerce in a 13-3 win.

The Raiders trailed 2-1 early on and led 6-3 through four innings before a seven-run fifth put the game away.

Phillips was 4-for-4 with a home run and three runs batted in. Ryan Cottingame doubled, tripled and drove in two, while Jake Wilcox also plated a pair of runs.

Nathan Hawkins got the win on the mound, striking out six in five innings of work.

Maypearl had turned the tables on Sunnyvale earlier in the day to rally for a 10-6 win. The game swung back and forth. After Maypearl took a 6-3 lead, the Raiders stormed back and tied it at 6-6 going to the sixth.

But that turned out to be the deciding inning, as Maypearl scored four times and Sunnyvale did not have an answer. Devin DeLeon had a RBI triple, while Rosato, Cottingame and Metzger also drove in runs.

The Raiders had no problems in the tournament opener as they crushed Lone Oak, 17-1. Wilcox struck out seven in three innings and Jimmie Henson had a pair of K's in one inning as they combined on a two-hit shutout.

Cottingame and Zander Thompson each had three runs batted in to pace the offense.
