12-5A GIRLS SOCCER: Tyler Lee stuns Horn, Rockwall edges Skeeters

Published: Wednesday, March 6, 2013 2:02 PM CST
Horn found the road a tough place to play on Tuesday as Tyler Lee was able to spring the upset, 4-3, on the Jaguars, who entered the night in second place in the 12-5A girls soccer race.

The Jaguars (5-2-1-0, 17 points) fell behind early on, but got on the scoreboard in the 19th minute when Adrianna Smith set up a goal by Ariana Dunsworth.

Horn tied the game with two goals in a span of four minutes late in the second half. Liz Campos scored off a feed from Courtney King and in the 72nd minute, Isabel Gracia assisted on a goal by Torri Sayman.

But Tyler Lee had one last answer in it, scoring in the final minutes to earn its first district win.

With the Horn loss, Rockwall (6-0-1-1, 21 points) was able to extend its lead on first place in 12-5A as it held on for a 1-0 win over Mesquite.

Longview had an opportunity to move into second place, but was tripped up by Rockwall-Heath, 2-1.

Horn will need to refocus in a hurry, as it will host Rockwall on Friday at 7:15 p.m. at Berry Middle School. If the Jaguars can earn a regulation win, they will move back to within a point of the Yellow Jackets and rejuvenate their hopes of a 12-5A championship.

North Mesquite also has a big match on Friday when it travels to play at Longview.

While both teams are currently in good position to make the playoffs, the loser of this match will remain within striking distance of both Mesquite and Rockwall-Heath, who can still make a run at the postseason.

The 12-5A teams will be off next week for Spring Break and will pick up the stretch run on Mar. 19.

FRIDAY

Horn has found itself in this position before.

With a bye on the opening day of the 12-5A season, the Jaguars found themselves playing catch-up with Rockwall from the start in the district points race.

Horn caught the Yellow Jackets and then passed them, but a hiccup against North Mesquite caused them to fall back into second place.

Undeterred, the Jaguars simply picked back up on the chase and with Rockwall idle on Friday, they closed back to within a point with a 4-0 victory over Rockwall-Heath.

Horn spread the wealth offensively, getting goals from four different players. Haley Hicks opened the scoring in the 10th minute when she took a feed from Adrianna Smith to give the Jaguars a 1-0 lead.

Just seven minutes later, that duo was at it again, only this time it was Hicks assisting on a goal from Smith to make it 2-0.

Horn kept the pressure on and pushed the advantage to 3-0 when Liz Campos scored in the 27th minute off an assist from Brooke Hill.

The Jaguars provided some second-half insurance when Arianna Dunsworth scored off a pass from Torri Sayman.

North Mesquite picked up one of its biggest victories of the season by downing crosstown rival Mesquite, 3-0. The Skeeters could have overtaken the Stallions for fourth place with a win, but instead, North Mesquite now holds a comfortable lead over the Skeeters in the race for the final playoff spot.

North Mesquite got a pair of goals from Aileen Lara and another score from Alexis Santos and the defense did the rest.
