Girls basketball: Big scoring in Big Spring: Lady Dragons score 34 in fourth quarter

Published: Tuesday, February 19, 2013 5:45 PM CST
Multiple career performances were on display Friday night for Southlake Carroll’s girls basketball team in their area round contest against El Paso Franklin in Big Spring.

And while the final score may not have shown it, the Lady Dragons needed every one of them.

Behind personal bests of 25 points from Kami Mickens and 17 from Madison Drescher, Carroll blew open what was a tight game to secure a 72-45 victory to advance to the regional quarterfinals for the third consecutive season.

“It was really a back-and-forth game going to the fourth quarter,” said Teri Morrison, Carroll head coach. “But we finally pulled away and played outstanding in the last quarter.”

Gretchen Morrison contributed 17 points for the Lady Dragons, including four 3-pointers in the fourth quarter, leading Carroll to a stretch where they posted 23 points in three minutes. For the quarter, the squad outscored Franklin, 34-13.

The Lady Dragons led at halftime, 29-17, before Franklin pulled to within six at the start of the fourth.

Last Tuesday, Carroll kicked off its playoff campaign with a 78-38 win over Weatherford in a game played at Fort Worth Nolan.

Mickens again paced the scoring effort with 19 points, while Leonard had 17 and Morrison scored 14. Savannah Nauwelaers and Sarah Williams chipped in eight points apiece.

Unlike against Franklin, Carroll led throughout against Weatherford. The Lady Dragons carried a 34-22 advantage to the break and again picked up the offense in the second half, where they scored 44 points.

“We were hitting on all cylinders,” Morrison said. “We shot 60 percent for the game and played well defensively. It was a good all around game for us.”

Carroll took aim at an appearance in the regional tournament Tuesday when it faced Lubbock Coronado at McMurry University in Abilene (results not available as of press time).

Coronado (32-1) entered the game ranked No. 5 in the state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches.

“They’re a great team and it’s going to take a good Carroll effort to get a win,” Morrison said. “But I think we’re ready and focused and we have really been shooting the ball well lately. Our defense has been solid, too. I think we’re in a good position and I like where we’re sitting right now.”

In each of the past two seasons, Carroll has lost in the third round against Duncanville. Last season, the Lady Panthers went on to claim the state title.
