A man has been charged with murdering his wife at their McKinney home.

McKinney police found a woman dead and her husband injured inside a residence in the 300 block of Pintail Drive late Wednesday afternoon.

They responded to a 911 call to the house at 4:15 p.m. and broke in to the house when they saw through a window a woman laying on the floor, said Sgt. Chad Barker, McKinney PD spokesman. The woman was later identified as 44-year-old Mary "Beth" Merz.

Also inside the home was a man, who police say is her husband, 42-year-old Eric Merz. He was transported to Baylor Medical Center at McKinney for treatment and is expected to survive.

Early reports indicated that during the on-site investigation, police focused their attention on a fire pit in the home's backyard. They stayed on scene to remove evidence from the house for much of the evening.

Police have not yet said how Mary Beth died or how Eric was injured. Police say Eric Merz is out of the hospital and is being charged with murdering his wife.

"I don't know any specifics about his actions or his motives, I just know that right now he was charged with murder," Barker said. "He's been cleared by the medical staff, and he's on his way to jail right now."
