WEB EXCLUSIVE: On target: May wins title, Allen second at archery state tourney

Katniss Everdeen would be proud.

Though not facing any life-threatening dangers in a contest put on by an oppressive government, Allen junior Sarah May showed her mettle with a bow and travailed the field of 195 archers to take first place in the high school girls division Feb. 15 at the 8th Annual Archery State Scholarship Championship.

May, who scored 287 points out of a possible 300 and struck the bull's-eye on 17 of 30 attempts, advances to May's National Archery Championships in Kentucky.

"It is great that Sarah is a state champion," said Jason Anderson, Allen head coach. "She has worked very hard and it paid off."

Along with her state championship trophy, May received a $2,000 college scholarship and a new bow. But that wasn't the only hardware to come the way of the Eagles as they finished second (four points back of first place) in the Team Group A competition.

That squad (which was honored for its performance Feb. 26 at the Allen Archery Arena in Lowery Center's K Hall) consisted of May, Dillon Boyd, Zack Casson, Brook Cooper, Ruston Davies, Chris Dill, Daniel Harper, Trevor Hoberg, Brandon Hutson, Cory Johnson, David Kerrigan, Anna McCloskey, Chris Monday, Jherid Morgan, John Ross Olofernes, Derek Patoskie, Emily Riddell, Carlos Sanchez, Blake Shelhimer, Kevin Shaw, Tiffany Shaw, Jarrett Webb, Megan Westphal and Chad Wolaver.

"I am so proud of all 160 students involved in the archery program," Anderson said. "And I congratulate our top 24 archers for their accomplishments."

While May won the girls division, she was joined on the leaderboard by several teammates as senior Anna McClosky (eighth place, 274 points), sophomores Melissa Pettersson (16th, 268) and Megan Westphal (19th, 267) all finished in the top 20.

Similar success could be found on the boy's side.

Sophomore Derek Patoskie (seventh, 283) paced Allen in a field of 279 shooters. Other top-20 entries were put forth by Kevin Shaw (12th, 278), Chris Dill (16th, 277), Dillon Boyd (17th, 276) and Brandon Hutson (20th, 274).

The Allen state contingent also included eight middle schoolers of which John Decker placed best. Decker was fourth in a field of 163 boys with 284 points and 15 bull's-eyes.
