Girls soccer: The Colony gearing up for showdown with Highland Park

Creekview's girls soccer team earned chance after chance Feb. 26 in a District 20-4A contest against The Colony.
But each time, Lady Cougars' goalie Taylor Erwin came up with the stop.
The result was a scoreless draw the kept the Lady Mustangs (2-1-1) even in the loss column with the Lady Cougars (3-1-1) as the teams enter the second half of district competition. Currently The Colony has one more match under its belt as a result of the five-team district which gives each squad a bye.
"I'm happy we got a draw," Medlen said, "but it's a little upsetting to get a shutout and only earn get a tie because we played so hard."
On the defensive end, Medlen credited McKeznie Wilson for her ability to mark The Colony's top forward.
"She's a very quick skill player and McKenzie shut her down," she said. "McKenzie didn't let her get off anything cleanly and kept her out of the game with her physicality."
Goalie Alyssa Palacios also contributed a key save down the stretch when she punched out a cross to preserve the shutout.
The Colony head coach Alexi Bassinger echoed the thoughts of Medlen and the physicality both squads played with.
"Nobody likes a tie," she said. "But it was a well-played match. We had our chances, more so in the second half, but all in all it was pretty evenly played."
Creekview hosted Smith Tuesday (results not available as of press time) before going on the road against Highland Park at 7 p.m. Friday. The team then has a break before resuming district March 19 against Little Elm.
"We know what we have to do against Smith," Medlen said. "And we're pumped up for Highland Park and The Colony down the road. The girls know they can win and I believe we can win. Hopefully this last stretch will catapult us into the playoffs."
In their first matchup, the Lady Mustangs came up short against defending state champ Highland Park, 1-0.
"It was 0-0 until the 70th minute," Medlen added. "We had chances. I can't tell you how many times we hit the post. We actually dominated the match at times and had control. And they had good stretches too; it was back-and-forth."
The Lady Cougars also had a match slated Tuesday against the Lady Scots (results not available of press time) that could improve their place in the district standings.
"It's a big match and can really be a confidence builder for us," Bassinger said. "It should be fun."
The Colony is hoping to have the offensive output similar to that of Friday, where they racked up six goals in a shutout victory over the Lady Trojans. Chelsea Martin and Andrea Molina scored two goals apiece, while Taylor Sargent and Kailand Thompson also scored.
"Kelsey has been our leading scorer all year and she keeps showing up at the right time," Bassinger said. "Two goals is something Andrea is capable of, too, and I'm expecting more of the same from her. She needs to keep stepping up offensively for us."
The Colony hosts Little Elm at 5:30 p.m. Friday before facing Creekview in its 20-4A finale at 7 p.m. March 22.
Boys soccer: Key game upcoming against Little Elm
The Colony's boys soccer team had a productive week as well, earning points in both its matches by playing Newman Smith to 2-2 tie Friday on the heels of a scoreless draw Feb. 26 against Creekview.
In the match against the Trojans, Chris Bramhall and Stephen Romo found the back of the net to supply the winning margin.
The Colony continued Tuesday at Highland Park (results not available as of press time) before hosting Little Elm at 7:30 p.m. Friday.
The Cougars (0-1-3) are tied with the Lobos for fourth in District 20-4A.
