Girls soccer: Cowgirls struggling to score

Published: Tuesday, March 5, 2013 5:51 PM CST
Defense has not been an issue of late for Coppell's girls soccer team as the squad has surrendered just one goal in its past four matches.

However, that has been good for just one outright victory as the Cowgirls have had difficulties putting the ball in the net, resulting in a 1-0-2 stretch.

The points accumulated put Coppell (3-1-2) in third in District 5-5A, but the Cowgirls still have a shot at claiming a district title with matches against second-place Flower Mound (4-2-0) and first-place Marcus (5-1-0) looming this week (Tuesday's results against the Lady Jaguars not available as of press time).

Last week, Coppell played Hebron (3-2-1) and Lewisville (1-4-1) to scoreless draws.

"We're doing pretty well," said Chris Stricker, Coppell head coach. "We have a big week coming up. If we can get hot and win our last four, we can win the district. But if we lose them, we'll probably finish fourth. There just isn't much separation and we knew that coming into this district."

Even matches against the bottom two squads, Lewisville and Denton Ryan, have been competitive. In their first meetings, Coppell defeated Ryan, 1-0, and followed Feb. 26 with a 0-0 result against the Lady Farmers.

"Our district is just so fast," Stricker said. "So you have to work so hard to score. You have to generate chances and then have the composure in the front to finish. We got a lot of good bounces early but it's not been happening recently."

On Friday, Coppell earned a draw against Hebron, 0-0.

"It was a good result," Stricker said. "Grace Vowell and Kayla Peterson did a great job in the back and our goalie McKenna Arras played really well and had big saves."

Stricker also credited midfielder Reagan Meyer for creating offensive opportunities.

"We're plugging along," he said. "We're struggling to score, but we're not giving up goals either and we're getting decent results here and there."

Coppell hosts Marcus at 7:30 p.m. Friday before going on the road at 7:30 p.m. March 19 versus Denton Ryan.

"We're healthy now and have everyone back," Stricker said. "We're excited to finish up and hopefully getting ready for the playoffs."
