Girls soccer: Carroll locks up playoff spot

Published: Tuesday, March 5, 2013 5:22 PM CST
Carroll's girls soccer team bounced back from its first loss in district (1-0 to Keller Central on Feb. 22) by picking up a pair of wins Feb. 26 over Keller Timber Creek, 4-1, and Friday over Richland, 5-0.

Carroll (9-1) is still in control of first ahead of Keller (7-2-1).

"It seemed like we really came back refocused from the loss," said Matt Colvin, Carroll head coach. "Sometimes it seems like we cruise along and get comfortable, but this went a long way to getting back on the right track."

Against Timber Creek, Carroll adjusted from a rough start.

"Timber Creek came out fast and really pressured us," Colvin said. "We didn't react to that and they scored pretty early. But we responded right away and made a statement. We kept the pressure on and were up at half, 2-1."

Sophie Groff, Meghan Murphy, Allison Savage and Devin Zavasky found the back of the net for Carroll.

"Devin came up from JV and is playing really well," Colvin said. "We had a few players out and it was just going to be for a game. But she's done so well that she'll stay up."

Colvin added that Zavasky and others have given the Lady Dragons even more versatility.

"We have a good combination of midfielders and individual play," he said. "That's kind of our stamp this year. We can attack in different ways. We've been good on set pieces, can force turnovers and can break teams down."

On Friday, the Lady Dragons blanked Richland, 5-0.

"Defensively, we've been doing a great job," Colvin said. "We've only allowed six goals in 22 matches and we have the goal of getting a shutout each match.

"Richland came out fast against us. For some reason, even though we have a lot of experience, we're not starting as fast as we would like. But when we get that first goal, we start to get in rhythm and gain confidence."

Murphy recorded a hat trick for Carroll, while Frankie Garrett and Nicole Sloan also chipped in goals.

"Meghan was just unbelievable in the air," Colvin said. "Two of her goals were on headers but even without her goals, she was completely dominant in the air. She probably won about 95 percent of the balls in the air. I think it was her best game on varsity."

Sloan, meanwhile, is finding her bearings after being sick to begin the season.

"She's starting to get her form and it was awesome to see her contribute," Colvin said. "She scored a goal that a majority of players on the field would have missed high."

With the wins, the Lady Dragons secured a playoff spot and can now focus on winning a district title.

Carroll continues at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Justin Northwest before hosting Keller at 1 p.m. Monday.

Boys soccer: Dragons hit lull

Carroll's boys soccer team has hit a bit of a rough patch. The Dragons are trying to respond to multiple injuries, but are winless in their last three matches.

After coming up short against Keller Central, 1-0, Carroll had a pair of matches last week where they managed a draw Feb. 26 against Keller Timber Creek, 1-1, before falling Friday against Richland, 2-0.
