The city of Mesquite and Keep Mesquite Beautiful began the year with the launch of a series of classes that are teaching residents about ways to be more environmentally conscious while improving their home maintenance and appearance. Each class has featured different subject matter in an attempt to address several areas where the city sees the need to assist residents through the education process.

"The classes are a partnership of KMB and the city of Mesquite. The goal is to help residents maintain their property and become more environmentally conscious," said Paige Swiney, KMB director. "The classes are something we have wanted to do for a long time. Things finally came together to offer them this year. They really go along with our goals to make Mesquite a better place to live, work and play."

The next class will address the issue of water conservation through landscaping. Swiney said there are many benefits to maintaining a nice yard, and the class aims to teach residents how to keep their yard looking good while using less water.

"Part of what we do is trying to get people to take care of their lawns with less water," Swiney said. "As part of this event we will have a horticulturalist there to share tips with everyone about lawn care. It's time to start fertilizing and getting lawns in order."

Keep Mesquite Beautiful has been focused on lawn care as part of their initiatives for several years through the Yard of the Month program. The program, which will start again in May, recognizes several yards throughout the city that have a nice appearance and promote water conservation techniques such as those being taught in the class.

"There are many benefits to a well-maintained lawn. The homeowner increases their property value and it keeps the soil from eroding and damaging the house's foundation," Swiney said. "The community also benefits because there is more oxygen being put into the atmosphere."

The lawn care class will be held from 10 to 11:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 2, at Rutherford Community Center, 900 Rutherford Drive. To register for the class call 972-329-8300 or email kfonvill@cityofmesquite.com.
