Highland Village celebrates 50th anniversary

During the Tuesday meeting, the Highland Village City Council recognized Highland Village's 50th anniversary.

On Feb. 14, 1963 with 53 votes for and seven opposed, the city of Highland Village became an incorporated city. According to the book, A History and Heritage of Highland Village, "Modern-day Highland Village morphed from a small, rural town into a suburban city seemingly overnight in the 1970's. The lifestyle here was based upon a distinct blend of rural Texans' aspirations and perspectives and the wishes of some wealthy Dallasites to 'get away from it all.' The desire was to become part of something related to the Dallas lifestyle but distinctly more relaxed and 'real' in the sense of seeking to enjoy nature and live closer to the land. These are recurring strains throughout the municipal history of the City of Highland Village, Texas."

The city will celebrate its 50th on Saturday at a semi-formal gala to be held at Celebrations Grand Ballroom.

Under the city council consent agenda, the city council continued their focused effort in managing and maintaining a "superior water system" with the approval for the design of the Highland Village Road waterline replacement project from FM 407 to the intersection of Brazos and the repainting of the Lake Vista Ground Storage tank. Both projects take up the need for the city to address aging infrastructure before there life cycle of failure which in turn may cause a higher replacement cost.

The city council unanimously approved a resolution accepting the city's 2013 Legislative program. The city council and staff will provide the legislative program to legislators during their visit to Austin for Denton County Days Feb. 18-19.

The council received the annual report confirming the police department's compliance with state law governing racial profiling. The law requires each law enforcement agency in the state to adopt a written policy on racial profiling and prohibit its practice, as well as submit a report containing the information compiled during the previous calendar year.
