Frisco organization takes part in Super Bowl health clinic

On Wednesday, when many people were preparing for Super Bowl parties, one Frisco organization spent the day making a different kind of preparations.
Sisterbration, a not-for-profit women's health organization with an office in Frisco, spent Wednesday in New Orleans, host city of this year's Super Bowl, providing free health services at Xavier University of Louisiana's "Dorsett Health Spectacular."
The event, which was hosted in coordination with former NFL player Tony Dorsett Jr., targets New Orleans' black and Latino communities with the highest concentration of health disparities. Minorities are typically more likely to lack healthcare in the United States than the average American, according to a report by the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality.
At the event, several health screenings and services were available for free, such as flu vaccinations as well as breast and prostate cancer screenings.
The Dorsett Health Spectacular took place in Xavier's new 93,000-square-foot Convocation Center and also included health challenges and information. Xavier University College of Pharmacy, Tulane Medical Center, the Louisiana Department of Public Health and other health services agencies will also be taking part in the event.
"We'll be involved in a panel regarding women's health to educate young college women on their some of the things they can be doing to live a healthier lifestyle," Clark said Tuesday. "In terms of the services we'll be providing, the average person can walk away from the health fair with about $1,000 worth of free screenings."
Sisterbration annually takes part in several large events, including the Essence Music Festival, an event that targets women of color and typically draws more than 400,000 attendees.
If the organization can find funding, it hopes to expand the health screenings at 10 other locations across the country. It already has an agreement with a health clinic in Nashville, and may finalize plans for the health tour before the first half of the year.
"Tony's hosted a similar health fair in Philadelphia, and we're hoping we could make the other stops before the end of the year," Clark said. "It all just depends on if we can get some corporate sponsorships."
Sisterbration will be part of the Little Red Dress Party, which promotes the education of heart disease in women, Feb. 10 in Dallas. Clark said most people aren't aware heart diseases are the leading cause of death for women.
