Wrestling: Coppell finishes second, third at holiday tourney

Published: Monday, December 31, 2012 2:44 PM CST
A multitude of Metroplex wrestling teams continued their preparation for the upcoming district tournaments Dec. 22 when they took part in the annual Santa Slam (boys) and Mrs. Claus Slam (girls) Tournaments hosted by Coppell.

Among the competitors were four District 5-5A programs, including Flower Mound, Marcus and Lewisville.

The Jaguars took home the top spot on the boys side (184.5 points) with Frisco Centennial finishing second (141) and Coppell placing third (133.5). The Colony finished sixth (104.5) with Marcus in seventh (87), Creekview in eighth (81.5) and Lewisville in 11th (65).

“The tournament went pretty well,” said Chip Lowery, Coppell head coach. “We got a good response from a lot of the teams there, and everyone seemed to enjoy it.”

In girls action, Frisco took first (107.5) and was followed by the Cowgirls in second (95), the Lady Farmers in fifth (72), the Lady Mustangs tied for seventh (58) and R.L. Turner in 14th (22).

Individually on the girls side, Creekview’s Leah Olguin (119) reached the finals before bowing out against Lindsay Spjut of The Woodlands by fall. Chloe Salomon also finished second for the Lady Mustangs (128), as did Turner’s Heiley Garcia (138) and Lewisville’s Brittany Marshall (165).

On the consolation side, Coppell’s Charlotte Lee topped Creekview’s Melissa Hernandez in the finals (110), Lewisville’s Beatriz Sanchez knocked off Coppell’s Cara Romeike (119), Coppell’s Stephanie Martinez defeated Sam Houston’s Jenae Wilson (148), Lewisville’s Jordan Lee won over Sam Houston’s Sabrina Herrera (215) and Coppell’s Anna Woo won a decision over Frisco’s Emma Bell (95). Coppell’s Heli Dave (138) also reached the consolation finals but was defeated.

“Our girls didn’t have anyone in the finals,” Lowery said. “But we had a lot of girls who got third or fourth or scored some points for us. It was a tough tournament, and I think it was the best our girls have wrestled all year.”

In boys competition, local squads racked up first-place finishes.

In the finals, Marcus’ Lucas Lovell picked up gold by defeating Centennial’s Will Curtiss (106), Flower Mound’s Dylan Akers pinned Coppell’s Austin Flores (126), Coppell’s Daniel Murillo earned a decision over The Colony’s Colt Stowe (132), Lewisville’s Jacob Pisana knocked off Arlington’s Quentin Perez (138), Flower Mound’s Scott Akers won by fall over The Colony’s Jose Estala (145), Drake Dudley won for the Jaguars over Colleyville Heritage’s Caleb Endert (160), Creekview’s Issac Bolivar took down The Colony’s Blain Ayyad (170), The Colony’s Dominick Thornhill cruised past Arlington’s Jackson Perkins (182) and Marcus’ Brandon Litten had little difficulty with Highland Park’s Christian Lorenzoni (195).

With his victory in the finals, Murillo (24-0) kept his perfect record in tact and was named the tournament’s Most Outstanding Wrestler.

“We did really well, we just didn’t have enough guys finish first,” Lowery said. “We kind of got beat up in the semifinals, and that was the difference in Flower Mound finishing ahead of us. But I was very pleased to see how many guys that didn’t make the finals that were able to come back and make their way through the consolation brackets. We just have to get more guys in first or second to really score the points to make the difference.”

Consolation winners were Coppell’s Alan Stockstill (106), Creekview’s Tanner Jones (138), Coppell’s David Murillo (145), Creekview’s Issac Salinas (160) and Flower Mound’s David Wojcicki (170) and Branson Roberts (195). Runners-up included Lewisville’s Hung Hoang (113), Marcus’ Austin Santogrossi (152) and Josh Hood (220), Flower Mound’s Ed Klecka (285) and Coppell’s Gerry Meddaugh (160), Matt Olson (170), Geoff Yut (182) and Michael Olson (195).

Coppell continues Friday and Saturday at the Grapevine Duals.

“It should be good competition, and we have the possibly get in 10 matches in just two days,” Lowery said.
