Denton County's hockey team pulled to .500 in the varsity East division of the AT&T Metroplex High School Hockey League following a 6-5 win Thursday against Midlothian.
The Spartans snapped a two-game skid with the victory.
The squads were tied, 4-4, entering the third period before goals from Kaleb Croft and Devin Howard in a span of 34 seconds put Denton County in control. Howard also scored in the first and second periods to net a hat trick for the Spartans, while Patrick Crowell and Brad Duggan also scored. Assists were recorded by Howard, Cameron Mixson, Ben Wissel, Max Comradi and Andrew Johnson, while goalie Darryll Smith made 33 saves.
Denton County (6-6) is in a four-way tie for fifth in the East division and looks to move above .500 for the first time since Nov. 20 (5-4) when it faces Marcus at 8:15 p.m. Thursday at the Dr Pepper StarCenter in Farmers Branch. The contest will be the final game before resuming play Jan. 10 following holiday break.
The Marauders (5-7), meanwhile, came up short Thursday against Allen, 4-2.
Michael Kobus got Marcus out to a solid start, scoring via an assist from Peter Hatton. However, the Eagles answered back with three consecutive goals in the second period, including a pair from Kevin Banachiewicz. Barrett Ramsey pulled the Marauders within one in the third period but Chandler Wells later added an insurance goal from Allen. Kamen Kessler denied 36 shots in net for Marcus.
