Celina fire station catches fire from dryer

Published: Wednesday, February 20, 2013 4:50 PM CST
A fire hit a little too close to home for the Celina Fire Department.

On Feb. 4, Celina firefighters were called back to the fire station, 311 North Louisiana, after a dryer caught fire in the living quarters of the building. No one was at the station when the fire first occurred and no one was injured.

"It's bad enough that I don't think we're going to occupy the building any more as a station for awhile," said Celina Fire Chief Mark Metdker.

The fire trucks and ambulances will remain in the fire station, but temporary housing for the living quarters and offices has been set up at the fire station.

"We managed to get the equipment out unharmed," Metdker said.

Metdker said on the day of the fire, EMS Chief/Division Chief Kyle Mills had stopped by the station to pick something up. When he opened the doors, a wall of black smoke hit his face.

"[Mills] opened all the doors and pulled all the equipment out," Metdker said. "He called the guys back [to the station]."

The furniture in the living quarters sustained smoke damage and some equipment in the apparatus bay will have to be replaced, as well as the washer and dryer.

Metdker said a new fire station is definitely in the future for Celina. The original fire station was built in the 1970s by fire department volunteers.

"We had a bond passed awhile back [that is] going to include a station," Metdker said. "This is just going to rush the process for us a little bit."

Firefighters will remain in the temporary housing until a new station can be built, which Metdker said he hopes will be within the next year. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
