The eighth annual Little Elm Citizens Fire Academy is set to begin its 10-week course Feb. 18, and the Little Elm Fire Department will be accepting applications until Feb. 11.

Little Elm residents and those who work in the town are encouraged to apply to the free program. The academy offers a behind-the-scenes look at what the local firefighters and administration do every day.

"Not every child dreams of being a firefighter, but for those of us who did, we're extremely excited about sharing our profession and calling with citizens who may have chosen other careers, but have always wondered about how we go about protecting lives and property," said Fire Chief Joe Florentino in a press release.

Classes will be held from 6:30-9:30 p.m. Monday evenings. There will be a couple of Saturday sessions for field day training. However, spots available in the class are limited.

"It's fun [and] educational," said Brian Roach, fire marshal and division chief. "You get a good understanding of the fire department and get to meet new people. We try to make it a fun and good experience."

During the program, participants will learn about hose drills, simulated firefighting at a training facility, what firefighters do at the station and more. They will also have an opportunity to ride along on actual calls with Little Elm firefighters.

"The course is very hands-on and includes CPR training and demonstration of how we use the various life-saving implements like the Jaws of Life vehicle extrication system," Roach said in the press release.

Applications can be found at www.littleelm.org/fire/cfa or by visiting the entry lobbies of both fire stations, 88 West Eldorado Parkway and 2301 Walker Lane. For information, contact Roach at 214-975-0424 or broach@littleelm.org.
