African American history program celebrates the lives and contributions of African-Americans, past and present

Published: Monday, February 11, 2013 1:06 PM CST
The Greater Frisco Chapter of Jack and Jill of America, Inc and Frisco ISD’s One Voice join together to celebrate the historical impact African Americans have made in the United States and abroad.  The program, entitled From Bondage to Freedom – Reflections of African American Contributions to the Past, Present and Future will be held Friday, Feb. 22, at the Wakeland High School Auditorium, 10700 Legacy Road in Frisco.

The evening’s featured guests and performers include WFAA weekend anchor Shon Gables.  Gables, a resident of Frisco and the night’s featured speaker.  Serving as mistress of ceremonies for the evening is radio personality Dede McGuire of K-104.5 and the nationally syndicated Doug Banks Show.

“We have an evening complete with dance, music, and a little history thrown in for good measure,” said Renee Sample, president of the Greater Frisco Chapter of Jack and Jill, Inc.  “We invite residents from across Frisco and the surrounding cities to join Jack and Jill as we celebrate African American History Month.”

Performers from across North Texas will provide entertainment for the evening, including the dance performances from the Dallas Black Dance Booms and the St. Philip’s School and Community Venter Girls of Faith Praise Dancers.  Guests will enjoy the rhythmic sounds movements of the Bandan Koro African Drum and Dance Ensemble.

The Wakeland High Schools will perform spoken word.  The children of Jack and Jill will honor African American legends for their contribution to American history and salute those African Americans still living with an innovative performance piece.

In addition to the performances, student entrepreneurs will show their wares at the Jack and Jill Marketplace, sponsored by Simon Engineering & Consulting, Inc. and Iconic Consulting Group, Inc.
