Bourbon and vodka may soon be on the shelves in Plano if a liquor referendum gets voter approval.

A group of residents submitted a petition last month to get a referendum allowing the sale of all alcoholic beverages within city limits on the May 11 ballot. City Secretary Di Zucco said Monday that the petition contained 20,477 signatures, significantly more than the 1,857 that were required.

Beer and wine are already available for sale in Plano. If approved in May, Plano would join Anna and Lowry Crossing as the only cities in the county that allow the sale of liquor for off-premises consumption.

The petition was organized by a group called Plano Citizens for Economic Equality. So far, no organized opposition has surfaced.
