The 12-5A girls basketball season will be on hold until the start of the New Year, but Horn and Mesquite will be feeling good about themselves until then after picking up district victories on Friday.

The Jaguars, who defeated Longview, and the Skeeters, who knocked off Rockwall-Heath, are tied for second place with 2-1 records, a game behind undefeated Rockwall, which blasted Tyler Lee on Friday.

Horn dominated from start to finish in a 67-40 victory over Longview.

The Jaguars used big runs in each of the first two quarters to open a 31-14 halftime lead.

The Lobos might have had a miraculous comeback on their minds in the fourth quarter, but Horn squashed that with a 16-7 run to close the game.

Lauren Bradshaw and Kristina Smith each scored 16 points, while Dawn Nwoko and Victoria Youman each added 10.

Mesquite used a stifling defense to roll to a 51-19 win over Rockwall-Heath.

The Skeeters led 17-9 after one quarter and then allowed only four points in the second and third periods combined to open a 44-13 advantage.

Brianna Williams matched the Hawks' scoring output by herself with 19 points, while Briana Caro added 12.

The teams will take a break from district play this week to compete in holiday tournaments, with the 12-5A slate set to resume on Wednesday.
