11-5A BOYS BASKETBALL: Eagles set up showdown with Lakeview, Sachse falls back into crowded pack

Published: Saturday, February 2, 2013 12:52 AM CST
One playoff team did exactly what it was supposed to do on Friday, while two postseason hopefuls jeopardized their situations.

Rowlett got off to a huge start and rode that wave until the end in a 70-54 victory over North Garland.

The Eagles improve to 9-1 in 11-5A and set up a clash for first place on Tuesday with undefeated Lakeview (9-0), which had a bye on Friday.

Rowlett could have been caught looking ahead, but made sure that would not happen with a 23-8 run to start the game. The final three quarters were relatively even, but the Eagles were content to sit on their cushion.

Jeffrey Carroll and Nathan Hawkins scored 23 and 22 points, respectively, for Rowlett. North Garland got 18 points from Sebastian Bermea and 14 from Seanc Christian.

Naaman Forest and Sachse could have all but wrapped up the third and fourth final berths, but neither was able to win, turning it into a four-team race for the final two spots with a week-and-a-half left.

The Mustangs got off to a quick start but could not sustain it in a 67-52 loss to South Garland. Sachse led by five after one quarter but was outscored 44-25 during the next two periods as the Colonels kept their playoff hopes alive.

The Rangers suffered a similar fate, missing out on a chance to clinch a postseason spot with a 43-40 loss to Garland.

Naaman Forest and Sachse still control their own destinies, but the road just got tougher.

The Rangers are in sole possession of third place at 5-5, followed by Sachse at 4-5, Garland at 3-6 and South Garland at 3-7.

The Rangers and Mustangs will meet on Tuesday, with the winner gaining a huge leg up in the playoff race. Garland will take on winless North Garland on Tuesday.

Sachse closes the regular season with games against North Garland and Lakeview.

Garland has the toughest stretch run against Lakeview and Rowlett, while South Garland hosts Naaman Forest on Friday and closes with North Garland.
