Marcus Academic Decathlon team places second


The Marcus Academic Decathlon team finished second in the Regional Competition last weekend and will advance to the state competition. 

LISD FFA

The Lewisville ISD Future Farmers of America (FFA) program will host a show and sale Feb. 23 at the LISD Chester Boyd Agriculture Center, located at the intersection of Fish Hatchery Road and Holford’s Prairie.

There will be an open house at noon, followed by the FFA show at 2 p.m. Dinner for sponsors will take place at 5 p.m., followed by the sponsorship sale at 6:30 p.m.

Kohl’s scholarship program

Kohl’s is now accepting nominations for the 2013 Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program. This scholarship program is different than others, in that Kohl’s recognizes kids ages six to 18 who have made a positive impact on their community through volunteerism. Nominations will be accepted now through March 15 at kohlskids.com.

‘Annie Get Your Gun’

Marcus High School will present “Annie Get Your Gun” at 7 p.m. Jan. 31, Feb. 1 and Feb. 2. Tickets are $10. Visit http://mhs.lisd.net for information and to purchase tickets.

LHS band, orchestra see success

Alex Tomkovich (euphonium) and Ryan Langer (tuba) both placed first in auditions at the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) area competition Jan. 12 in Abilene. They will represent LHS in the All-State Band at the TMEA Convention in San Antonio in February. All-Area qualifiers were Ryan Langer (tuba), Ashlyn Phillips (French horn), Ross Reinhart (euphonium) and Alex Tomkovich (Euphonium).

All-Region qualifiers were Edward Ahn (French horn), Preston Beck (tenor trombone), Graham Blakeney (clarinet), David Crowell (French horn), Marisa Garza (alto clarinet), Harrison Herd (trumpet), Giorgio Ioannou (clarinet), Ryan Langer (tuba), Mily Montanez (flute), Sara Oliveira (French horn), Ashlyn Phillips (French horn), Ross Reinhart (euphonium), Bryson Shultz (trumpet) Derek Simmons (bassoon), Draven Simmons (bassoon), Alec Stewart (baritone saxophone), Alex Tomkovich (euphonium), Kevin Vasquez (clarinet) and Kris Wanga (tenor trombone).

Freshmen All-Region qualifiers were Joseph Do (French horn), Ashley Gassner (oboe), Aaron Mincey (percussion) and Steven Nguyen (euphonium)

Additionally, four students were selected by audition for the honors band/orchestra of America that will perform at the Music for All National Festival in Indianapolis in March. David Crowell (French horn) will perform with the orchestra and Preston Beck (tenor trombone), Ryan Langer (tuba) and Draven Simmons (bassoon) will perform with the Honors Band.

Marcus students make all-state choir

The following students from Marcus were named to the all-state choir: Kevin Easley, Austin Gunter, Leanne Halliburton, Autumn Langston, Abby McIlvain and Preston Smith. Callie Cowart and Sara Marshall were named first alternate finishing one spot out from the choirs.

LHS choir members gets first chair

Fighting Farmer Daniela Ruelas made first chair at TMEA Area competition in Abilene Jan. 12. Ruelas will represent the LHS Choral Program in the All-State Mixed Choir in San Antonio in February.

LHS UIL accounting, journalism, writing win at meet

The LHS UIL accounting team of Cindy Nguyen, Jackie Herrera, Alexis Bockemehl and Inez Aguirre won first place at the Flower Mound High School UIL Academic meet Jan. 12. In individual competition, Nguyen won first, Herrera took second and Bockemehl placed fifth. In journalism, Anthony Tran placed fourth in both news writing and headline contests and Shannon Roper won fifth in ready writing, expository writing competition.

College Notes

George Mason University

John Bachinskas, of Flower Mound has been selected to represent Texas as a National Youth Delegate at the 2013 Washington Youth Summit on the Environment at George Mason University.

Bachinskas has been awarded the opportunity to join a select group of 250 students from across the country to participate in an intensive week-long study of leadership in environmental science and conservation. Bachinskas was chosen based on academic accomplishments and a demonstrated interest and excellence in leadership in the sciences and conservation studies.

George Mason University along with partners, National Geographic and the National Zoo are excited to welcome the nation's youth scholars to Washington, D.C. With distinguished faculty, guest speakers, and direct access to elite D.C. practitioners, the Washington Youth Summit on the Environment offers aspiring environmentalists and student leaders an unparalleled experience. The week-long program is held at George Mason University's state-of-the-art campus. The summit will encourage and inspire young leaders who desire a unique experience focused on successful careers in this dynamic industry. The Washington Youth Summit on the Environment will be held June 23-28.

Stephen F. Austin

Craig Wright of Flower Mound and Chrystina Wyatt of Cedar Hill have been chosen for the 2013 Mr. and Miss SFA award.

The two students will be honored at halftime of the SFA men’s basketball game between SFA and Oral Roberts on Feb. 9.

Tarleton State

Tarleton State University has released the Distinguished Students list for the fall 2012 semester. Students on the list include freshman and sophomore students who have a minimum 3.25 grade point ratio (GPR) and no grade lower than a 'C,' and juniors and seniors who have a minimum 3.5 GPR with no grade lower than a 'C.' All must be in good standing with the university.

Students from Flower Mound making the list are: Julie Wilkes, Noah Ringenberger, Haley Roberts, Kristyn Grant and Ashley Hession.

Texas Woman’s University
