Football: Brewer, Smith stay hot

Published: Tuesday, October 23, 2012 4:12 PM CDT
Newman Smith's football team pulled to .500 in District 10-4A last Friday as the Trojans held off North Forney, 36-22.

Quarterback Cole Brewer led the offense with his most dynamic game to date, finishing the contest 21-of-28 passing for 285 yards and two touchdowns to go with 22 rushes for 196 yards and a score.

"He was the star of the game," said Paul Ressa, Smith head coach. "That was his best game. He was making all of the correct reads and was really throwing the ball well. And he can always make plays with his legs. He wasn't hesitant at all in what he was doing."

Brewer was able to distribute the ball throughout, completing at least two passes to six different receivers.

"We have a lot of weapons," Ressa said. "And he was using them all and taking advantage of the matchups we had."

In the third quarter, with Smith leading, 20-15, Brewer connected with Ryan Huntley for a 50-yard touchdown pass that helped break the game open.

Later in the fourth, after North Forney had trimmed the lead to eight, kicker Edward Valadez converted field goals 20 and 38 yards to seal the win. Valadez finished with five field goals on the night.

Huntley's final line included five catches for 80 yards, while Zach Rasmussen matched with five catches and a team-high 88 yards. Marcus Sonnier also hauled in a touchdown reception for Smith in the second quarter.

On the defensive side, the Trojans surrendered 281 yards rushing and 177 passing.

However, Keith Burse and Alex Gordon came through with interceptions for the Trojans, the latter saw Gordon tip the ball on the defensive line to himself for a game-altering play.

"We were never trailing the whole game," Ressa said. "And that was a big play in keeping it that way."

Smith continues at 7:30 p.m. Friday against West Mesquite at Memorial Stadium.

"They have a very talented quarterback (Chason Virgil)," Ressa said. "He's a runner and can do a lot of things. But they have athletes all over the place and are a well-coached team. They have DI talent all over the place and pose a lot of problems. We're going to have to be ready to play."

Defensively, Ressa credited West Mesquite for its ability to rally to the ball.

"They're all good tacklers and they play very aggressively," he added. "We just have to keep on moving and playing the right way at the right time. It's not a make or break game, but it's one we would really like to have because a win would put us in a good spot."

Smith (4-3, 2-2 in district) is tied for fourth with Forney and trails West Mesquite and Mesquite Poteet by one game.
