Lacrosse Roads: Allen boys, girls appear on verge of breakout seasons

Published: Wednesday, January 30, 2013 3:16 PM CST
Considering its spring season launches just after football is completed, in the middle of basketball and soccer season, and less than a month before the start of baseball and softball, lacrosse can get lost in the sports shuffle.

Allen is working hard to ensure that isn't the case anymore.

The boys are entering their third year at the Division I level and second under head coach Zack Colburn, a Hall of Fame lacrosse player. Such credentials will no doubt come in a handy for a schedule that begins at noon Saturday on the road against Colleyville and also includes upcoming road games versus powerhouses St. Marks (March 1), Episcopal School of Dallas (March 5) and Highland Park (April 2).

Allen still has a young roster, with only six seniors, but does feature some notable names. Among them is senior Carson Boone, who will sign a latter of intent Wednesday to play for Hendrix College, a Division III school in Conway, Ark. that is expected to be a contender in the Southern Athletic Conference going forward.

"Carson is very excited about this opportunity," said Larry Boone, Carson's father. "Carson will be playing his same position at attack and also retain his No. 27 jersey."

Another senior on this season's squad is Jack Hawkins, who was a linebacker on the Eagles football team that just won the Class 5A Division I State Title.

If Hawkins is to match that feat at the lacrosse level, it would be May 4-5 when the Texas High School Lacrosse League State Tournament takes place at Clark Stadium in Plano.

Expectations are similarly high for the Lady Eagles.

Coaches Shannon Parengkuan and Doug Ayers noted they are, "very pleased with the team and the progress they have made in our fall season," with the duo adding they have, "their sites set on making a strong run for the state tournament."

That run begins in earnest Saturday when traveling to the University of Dallas to face Ursuline at 10 a.m.

Don't look for the girls to be rusty as they were in College Station over the weekend for the Aggieland Tournament.

The JV squad went undefeated at the event and the varsity started 3-0 following victories over Houston Cy-Fair (9-2), Austin Westlake (9-2) and Houston Memorial (10-5). Those wins, including Allen's first ever over Cy-Fair, put the Lady Eagles into bracket play Sunday afternoon against Plano. Allen led at the break, 5-0, but the physicality increased in the second half with Plano eventually tying the game and winning in double overtime, 7-6.

Those teams will rematch at 7:30 p.m. Feb. 12 from the old Eagle Stadium.

Much like Boone is signing to play in college from the boys team, the Allen girls have their own players (defender Meghan Ayers and middie Kate Davis) set to play at Hendrix.

"A factor in this decision is that Hendrix is closer to home than the majority of colleges they have been in contact with, from Ohio to the Carolinas," said Brenda Davis, Kate's mother. "As parents and fans of the sport, we are really excited to see the new programs coming up in this region."

The commits are unlikely to stop with Ayers and Davis as Ashley Ishmael, Adrienne Neef and Paige Morrison have all been in contact with college programs and are still deciding on a destination.
