Trustees name lone finalist for superintendent position

Published: Sunday, January 27, 2013 1:00 PM CST
Garland ISD Trustees on Thursday, Jan. 24, named Dr. Bob Morrison lone finalist for the district's superintendent vacancy in a specially called meeting. Morrison, current superintendent for Mansfield ISD, is expected to assume the duties of GISD superintendent sometime after a state-mandated 21-day waiting period.

Morrison succeeds Dr. Curtis Culwell, who retired Dec. 21 after 14 years as GISD superintendent and 37 years in public education.

The selection of Morrison as sole finalist concludes a four-month search for Culwell's replacement. With the assistance of School Executive Consulting, the board garnered public input from community members as well as GISD staff to develop a wish list of qualities the district desired in a new superintendent.

Dr. Bob Morrison
Morrison, a 24-year educator, has been superintendent of schools in Mansfield since 2009. Following a successful tenure in Oklahoma public schools as a teacher, coach, assistant principal and high school principal, he accepted a position in MISD as the director of student services. He was then promoted to assistant superintendent of secondary schools, then deputy superintendent.

As superintendent of Mansfield, Morrison has led many innovative developments such as the 1-on-1 iPad initiative for high school students and teachers, the MISD iPhone App launch, a districtwide strategic plan, and the development, construction, and completion of a 5,500-seat auditorium and teacher professional development center.

Morrison is one of 38 superintendents in Texas to serve the Future-Ready Superintendents Program and contributes to the ongoing Visioning Institute Document, "Creating a New Vision for Public Education in Texas." He is a member of many community service groups and serves as a board member for several, including the Fast Growth Coalition, Our Community Our Kids, Mansfield Chamber of Commerce, Mansfield Methodist Hospital Community Advisory, and the Arlington Salvation Army.

Morrison received his Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from the University of Phoenix, his Superintendents Certificate from the University of Oklahoma, a Master of Education from the University of Central Oklahoma, and a Bachelor of Science in Education from Oklahoma Baptist University.

His wife is a high school counselor. The couple has three daughters.
