Bowled over: Six PCA players being showcased in postseason games

Published: Friday, December 14, 2012 11:55 PM CST
The Prestonwood Christian Academy football season ended last month in the second round of the playoffs.

Yet Lions can still be found across the gridiron this month and next as six seniors (Nate Jones, Elliott Mason, Zach Missimo, Mike Mitchell, Christian Morgan, Grayson Warren) were selected for high school all-star games.

"I could not be more proud of a team and how they fought through adversity than this one," said Chris Cunningham, Prestonwood head coach. "There were a lot of challenges that arose as the season played out and our team persevered because our players stepped up; this is just further proof of that."

Linemen Missimo, Jones, linebacker Mason and running back Warren got the bowl season started Saturday by playing for the East team in the Tom Hillary All-Star Game at Pennington Field in Bedford.

Morgan and Mitchell will be further from home when they take the field next month.

Morgan, a tight end committed to Ole Miss, is playing for the West team in the Semper Fidelis All-American Bowl, which is Jan. 4 at the Home Depot Center in Carson, Calif. The 8 p.m. game will be televised live on the NFL Network.

Prestonwood will be represented on national television again the next day as Mitchell plays for the West in the U.S. Army All-American Bowl. That game, which emanates from the Alamodome in San Antonio and drew more than 39,000 fans last season, begins at noon and will be shown on NBC. Mitchell, a linebacker, has yet to announce his college commit but could do so at the game.

Mitchell will be a busy man in San Antonio.

In addition to the game, he will attend the U.S. Army All-American Bowl Awards Dinner the night before as one of 16 finalists selected for Player of the Year. Mitchell is also one of eight finalists for the Felix "Doc" Blanchard and Glenn Davis Awards.

"The nominees for the Felix "Doc" Blanchard and Glenn Davis Awards epitomize the Army's high standard of excellence in community service, education and athletic distinction," said John Myers, U.S. Army Marketing and Research Group director of strategic communications.

Mitchell is up for the Davis Award alongside quarterback Max Browne (Washington), offensive lineman Steven Elmer (Michigan) and Corey Robinson (Texas).

Taking part in awards season is nothing new for Mitchell as he was at the CBS-11 and TXA-21 Studios in Fort Worth on Friday after being selected for the Whataburger All-North Texas Team.
