Academies net more than 1,000 applications
By Conner Hammett, chammett@starlocalnews.com
Acceptance letters were sent Friday to future and current Plano ISD high school students hoping to attend one of the district's three academies next school year.
Jan. 11 was the last day for students to apply for one of the academies.
The Academy High School, 1701 Alma Road, received 439 applications from ninth- and 10th-graders. Since the amount of ninth-grade applicants exceeded the school's 150-per-grade level enrollment limit, a lottery was conducted to determine which students would be offered acceptance into the academy.
The International Baccalaureate World School, which will be located at Plano East, received 299 applications from students in grades nine through 11. The IB academy does not have an enrollment cap.
Nancy Humphrey, Place 3 on the Plano ISD Board of Trustees, said she was happy about the turnout for all of the academies, adding that her daughter, who is in the IB program at Plano East, will be a part of that academy next year.
"I love the fact that we're able to give kids [a] choice," she said.
The 11th and 12th grade wing of the Health Sciences Academy, located at Plano East, will open in the fall of 2014 for incoming juniors.
Plano ISD did not respond to requests to speak with a district administrator about the number of applications.
