LDS youth give day of service

On Jan. 19, 230 southern Denton County teens participated in eight separate service projects benefitting the local community as part of an annual youth conference held by The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.
The group included members from seven local communities and five high schools. The group, ages14-18, performed service to the following recipients: CCA ReSale Colony, CCA ReSale Carrollton, Grace Donation Station, Graceful Buys, CCA Main Campus, CCA ReSale Lewisville, Martin Oaks Cemetery and Camp Summit.
"Service is what our church is all about," said Flower Mound youth leader Sherry Titensor. "It creates unity and brings us closer to Christ."
"We had a lot to do but we had a lot of fun, too," Jones said. "You can really feel the spirit when working and doing service for others."
A planning committee of 16 youth organized the entire conference including the service projects, activities, workshops, a dance, food and a small scale flash mob.
"Our youth are the leaders of tomorrow, both in the church and in our communities. It is important for them to undertake leadership roles to prepare them for the future," Titensor said. "I am so proud of their work ethic. They didn't stand around or hesitate; they just rolled up their sleeves and got to work."
"Whatever you're doing with your youth, keep doing it. We'll take them back anytime," said an employee at Graceful Buys in Grapevine.
Guyer High School junior Raegan Robertson, who served on the youth conference committee, said, "Our theme was 'Stand Ye in Holy Places and Be Not Moved.' We tried to encourage people to feel welcome and to understand that anywhere they go, if they are good examples, where they stand can be a holy place."
Marcus High School junior, Joe Cosby, provided service at the CCA's main campus in Lewisville. Crosby and six other teens moved furniture into trucks for redistribution.
"While the work was satisfyingly difficult and moving the bulky furniture wasn't exactly a cake walk thinking of all the families that would be receiving the furniture gave me peace and joy," Crosby said.
The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints encourages its more than 14 million members throughout the world to serve their neighbors. Its global humanitarian outreach programs provide relief both in times of natural and manmade disasters and also in ongoing projects such as neonatal resuscitation training, clean water projects, wheelchair distribution, vision treatment and measles vaccinations.
