Football: Mustangs gallop past Flower Mound

Published: Saturday, September 22, 2012 1:07 AM CDT
FLOWER MOUND - Sachse entered Friday's non-district meeting against Flower Mound with a perfect record, winning three outings that averaged a combined 96 points per game.

Its contest against the Jaguars featured just 29 total points.

But they were all scored by the Mustangs in a shutout victory.

"We struggled a little bit tonight but it was one of those things where we made enough plays when it counted," said Mark Behrens, Sachse head coach. "The defense stepped up a little bit and did a little better and we were pleased to see that."

Flower Mound's defense did an admirable job as well, including limiting quarterback Kent Myers - who entered averaging 132 yards and 3.3 touchdowns per game on the ground - to just 21 yards on 13 carries. However, Myers completed 21-of-30 passes for 347 yards and three touchdowns as the Mustangs built a 21-0 halftime lead before settling for the final 29-0 margin.

"They're a good ball club and coach Johnson has them going," Behrens said. "But we're excited where we are at. We're going to get better every game and we have a lot of young guys and inexperienced guys. Tonight was a good step."

Flower Mound, meanwhile, struggled on the offensive end, totaling 285 yards against Sachse's 459. The Jaguars had three lengthy drives but were unable to put up points, including a 10-play drive in the second quarter that resulted in an interception, a 14-play drive to open the second half that ended in turnover on downs following a crippling chop block penalty, and a 14-play drive on their final possession that concluded with a fumble.

"It's frustrating," said Dane Johnson, Flower Mound head coach. "We made too many mistakes and beat ourselves. And that's two games in a row now, so that's really frustrating. The kids are trying hard, but for whatever reason, we're making a lot of silly mistakes and we have to clean that up. We got in a hole and we can't recover from that."

The Jaguars also continued to rotate quarterbacks.

On Friday, Connor Wanhanen was the more effective thrower, completing 15-of-22 passes for 143 yards with an interception, while Matt Hirst went 3-of-8 for 19 yards with a pick.

"I think it was how the series went," Johnson said. "We try to play [both quarterbacks] evenly, it's just that one had more plays going than the other. But we're not pleased with anything we're doing offensively right now. We're not doing anything right."

For the Mustangs, Behrens was glad to see the defense bow up when the Jaguars entered scoring territory.

"They made the plays when they had to make them," he said. "It's kind of cliché but we're proud of them because they've had some points scored on them the last few weeks and tonight we stepped up. That's a good offense Flower Mound has, so we're pretty pleased."

Sachse gained the advantage early, scoring on its first possession on a 5-yard touchdown run from Devine Ozigbo, who had 44 yards on four carries on the drive en route to 95 yards on the day.

Myers doubled the lead on Sachse's ensuing possession, completing three consecutive passes, the last a 20-yard strike to receiver Austin Williams for a score.

The rest of the Mustang passing attack centered around receiver Tyrique Edwards, who had six catches for 173 yards and two touchdowns, including 32-yard scoring grab in the second to put Sachse in control at 21-0.

Edwards also had a 77-yard reception in the third but was kept out of the end zone on a touchdown-saving tackle by Nathan Liebsch. The Jaguar defense then denied Sachse three times from inside the 5-yard line, forcing a field goal attempt that missed.

"Defensively, we played real well," Johnson said. "We couldn't get a first down in the first half and still held those guys to 21 points. In the second half, the same thing, and they only scored one time. I'm proud of them, they did a great job. We just have to help them out offensively."

Flower Mound has one more game to prepare for district when they travel to face Plano West at 7:30 p.m. Friday at Murphy's Kimbrough Stadium.

"We have to grow up a little bit and that's really what it is," Johnson said. "It's going to be a little gut check time. [West] is a good team and we're playing on the road, so we're going to have to grow up in a hurry and get after it. It doesn't get any easier."

Sachse, meanwhile, looks to carry this momentum into its District 11-5A opener at 7:30 p.m. Friday when it hosts North Garland.

"We're going into district next week and we're trying to start it off right," Behrens said. "We'll go from there, but we're going to enjoy tonight and then get back to work tomorrow."
