Girls basketball: Marcus bounces back with win over Lewisville

Published: Friday, January 25, 2013 10:58 PM CST
LEWISVILLE -- Marcus' girls basketball broke out of a recent rough patch of consecutive losses Friday when the Lady Marauders pulled away from Lewisville on the road for a 57-35 victory.

Marcus outscored the Lady Farmers in each of the four quarters, including 32-20 during the second and third quarters.

Vanessa Jones scored a game-high 16 points for the Lady Marauders, including four 3-pointers, while Sierra Bone posted 11 and Morgan Easley recorded seven.

The win keeps Marcus (5-2) in second and in the hunt in for the District 5-5A title behind Flower Mound (7-0). Lewisville (1-6) remains one game back of the fourth spot occupied by Hebron (2-5) and Coppell (2-5).

"The last three games we've learned about our mentality," said Fred Jones, Marcus head coach. "You're either the hunter or you're the hunted. I think the last few games we've lost, we were the hunted. We didn't have that championship mentality and that was our focus tonight. We wanted to go after them and that made a big difference. They came out with a lot of energy."

The Lady Farmers were within four after one quarter before Marcus gradually pulled away.

"I thought we had an excellent first quarter and looked good in the zone and the man defense," said Charlotte Jones, Lewisville head coach. "[Marcus] is just a good team and passes the ball very well. And they get their hands on a lot of balls and rebound well."

Fred also believed Marcus' distribution was key.

"We shared the ball," he said. "We were patient and if we do that, great things can happen. Tonight, most of our shot attempts were uncontested because of that."

The Lady Marauders were at their best in the third quarter, where they outscored the Farmers, 17-10 and had six different players with buckets.

"Offensively, we talked about good versus great in our shot selection," Fred said. "I thought we got great shots and played great defense."

Jada Butts paced Lewisville with 11 points (eight in the second half), while Elizabeth Simon chipped in nine and Monisha Neal scored six to go with 13 rebounds.

"I was very pleased with the effort," Charlotte said. "We kept fighting. But a lot of our shots weren't falling and I thought we could have done a better job of rebounding and being physical. Overall, I was pleased though."

Lewisville looks to keep its playoff hopes alive at 6 p.m. Tuesday at Denton Ryan before closing the season with contests at Hebron and at home against Coppell.

"We're trying to knock of the next three teams and if we can do that, then things will be looking up for us," Charlotte said. "But we can't take them lightly and have to come in playing hard. We have our whole team healthy now, so no excuses."

Marcus continues at 6 p.m. Tuesday at home against Coppell.

"For us, momentum is always fickle," Fred said. "We have to get it back and get that enthusiasm and fire back. Tonight was a great start and we're going to need that to finish this district run."
