Boys basketball: Farmers split games in Waco

Published: Friday, January 4, 2013 10:14 PM CST
Behind the scoring of Caleb Loggins and Anthony Davis, Lewisville's boys basketball team split four games last Thursday-Saturday in Waco at the MT Rice Tournament.

The Farmers opened with losses Thursday and Friday against Waco Connally (55-45) and Houston Eisenhower (48-45), respectively, before responding Saturday with a pair of wins over Waco La Vega (67-57) and Waco (61-54).

"We didn't play as well as I had hoped in our first game against Connally," said Gary Collier, Lewisville head coach. "We had five days off before the tournament and it looked like we didn't really do anything to get ready for the game. But I started to see a better effort in our second game on Friday and then we played much better on Saturday."

In the loss against Eisenhower, the Farmers missed a couple of key free throws late in the fourth quarter before a turnaround jumper by the Eagles sealed the win.

"We didn't start very well and we missed some rebounding assignments that cost us," Collier added.

But on Saturday, Lewisville's defense sparked a pair of victories.

"We were more focused and were executing better," Collier said. "And we started making a few plays and forcing turnovers to get in an up-and-down game. We still didn't play quite as well as I would have liked, but the kids endured and played well enough to win."

In the win against La Vega, Loggins scored 20 points, including 4-of-4 from the free throw line, while Davis scored 14 and also paced the Farmers in rebounding.

Davis posted a team-high 22 in the win over Waco, while Loggins chipped in 15.

"Caleb shot the ball really well," Collier said. "He hit a lot of mid-range jumpers from 8-10 feet away. Anthony did a good job of finishing around the basket but he also stepped out and made a 3-pointer and hit a few jumpers.

"We also did a better job with turnovers. The ones in the first few games were kind of expected after the break but we didn't better on Saturday."

On Friday, the Farmers went on the road against Plano West (results not available as of press time).

Lewisville continues at 8 p.m. Tuesday against Triple A Academy before opening district at 7:30 p.m. Friday when they host Denton Ryan.
