12-5A BOYS BASKETBALL: Skeeters, Lobos remain deadlocked atop standings

Published: Wednesday, January 9, 2013 2:26 PM CST
Mesquite and Longview pushed further ahead of the 12-5A pack on Tuesday, as each picked up victories to improve to 4-0 in district play.

The Skeeters and Lobos now have a two-game lead over third-place Tyler Lee, which defeated Horn on Tuesday.

Mesquite overcame a slow start by outscoring Rockwall 41-16 during the second and third quarters and that proved to be the difference in a 62-37 victory.

Alex Cooper had 18 points and Rashard Higgins added 14 for the Skeeters, who continued their torrid run during the past month.

Horn slipped to 1-2 in district play with a 52-48 loss to Tyler Lee on Tuesday. The Jaguars never could get their fast-paced offense untracked, despite 16 points from Anthony Sharp and 11 from Jarrison Stewart.

Horn managed only four points in the first quarter, but they did claw back to draw even at 31-31 through three quarters.

The game remained tight, but Tyler Lee did what it took down the stretch to gain a leg up in the district standings.

Mesquite will get a chance to rest on Friday with a bye before its showdown with Longview on Tuesday. The Lobos will have to stay focused with a road game against Rockwall on Friday.

Horn and North Mesquite will meet on Friday with the winner taking over sole possession of fourth place.

The Jaguars and Stallions will also have key games against the top bottom teams in the district, playing Rockwall and Rockwall-Heath, respectively, on Tuesday.

SATURDAY

Horn picked up its first district victory with a 70-51 win over Rockwall-Heath on Saturday.

The Jaguars led 31-26 at halftime and although they were up by nine going to the fourth quarter, the Hawks were still within striking distance.

But Horn put it away during the final eight minutes, outscoring Rockwall-Heath 20-10 to win comfortably at the end.

John McMiller had a big game for the Jaguars with 22 points while Alan Hodge and Sharp added 18 and 16 points respectively.

WEDNESDAY

Mesquite's Alex Cooper spent the fall showing off his ability to take over games on the football field.

The senior is showing that same trait on the basketball court.

Cooper scored a game-high 34 points as Mesquite picked up a big, early-district victory with a 55-48 win over Tyler Lee last Wednesday.

Mesquite, which did not have another player in double figures, needed all the scoring it could get down the stretch. The Skeeters trailed at halftime and were tied through three quarters before outscoring the Red Raiders 21-14 in the fourth quarter.

North Mesquite was solid from start to finish in their 51-35 victory over Rockwall.

The Stallions used a 13-6 run in the second quarter to take control and then allowed only six points in the final period.

Ryan Bradley led the offense with 18 points, while Norman Alexander added 11.
