Wrestling: Lewisville hosts state tourney

Spots for the ASICS/Vaughan Junior and Cadet Wrestling National Championships were on the line May 19 at the 2012 Texas Freestyle and Greco-Roman State Championships in Lewisville.
The top three finishers in each event at the state tourney qualified to compete at nationals, which takes place July 18-24 in Fargo, N.D.
Lewisville head wrestling coach Kent Hall said more than 800 competitors took part in the event and many local athletes found success.
Rounding out the Coppell competitors were Stephanie Martinez with second in women's freestyle, Daniel Murillo in third in junior Greco and fourth in junior freestyle, David Murillo with third in adult Greco, second from Julian Garcia in novice freestyle and fourth in novice Greco and Avery Souders with a third-place finish in women's freestyle.
"I think Roger is going to go to Fargo," said Chip Lowery, Coppell head coach. "I'm not sure if the rest of our qualifiers are going yet."
The Colony's Jake Green took fourth in Greco and third in freestyle (170), while Colton Stowe finished second in Greco (138).
Flower Mound's Blaine Odom qualified after placing second in both freestyle and Greco, while Marcus' Dylan Ross won four matches en route to fourth (160) in Greco. Trevor Foust (125) won four matches as well for the Marauders.
"Dylan wrestled very well but just missed out on the finals by one match," said Michael Prado, Marcus wrestling head coach. "Trevor won four matches as well but he was competing in a very large bracket."
Prado said that while the team won't have anyone traveling to Fargo, the team will continue training during the summer in preparation for the 2012-13 season.
"They'll be doing a lot of training camps and a lot of different training," Prado said. "There are a lot of opportunities in this area and we're already excited to get going in our new district next year."
The Marauders will be competing with Lewisville, Flower Mound, Hebron, Coppell, Grapevine, Colleyville Heritage and R.L. Turner.
"It should be a very competitive district," Prado said.
While Marcus will stay busy, Flower Mound's competitors are using the summer as an opportunity to relax.
"It's kind of depressing for me as a coach," joked Steve Davis, Flower Mound wrestling head. "We have a national champion and three state champions and had a very good spring. They worked very hard during the season and will continue training during the summer but they are going to take a little time off."
From Lewisville, Jacob Pisano competed but did not place.
