10-4A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Highland Park hands West Mesquite rare district loss

Published: Thursday, January 3, 2013 10:30 PM CST
During its streak of district championships, West Mesquite has shown the ability to rise to the occasion whenever a serious challenge has been presented.

But in one of the early showcase games of the 10-4A season, it was Highland Park that stole the show, racing to a huge early lead on its way to a 65-54 victory over the Wranglers on Thursday.

The Scots improve to 4-0 and are tied for first place with Carrollton Newman Smith, while West Mesquite slips back into third place at 3-1.

Highland Park came out firing, opening a 23-11 lead after one quarter. The Wranglers were unable to get untracked, as the Scot advantage swelled to 54-33 through three quarters.

West Mesquite made a strong surge to close the game, but it fell far short. Claudia Price had 20 points, while Tamia Culligan and Alexis Jordan each added 11 for the Wranglers.

At the other end of the standings, Poteet's rough season continued with a 51-37 loss to Carrollton Creekview.

The Pirates were hoping to pick up their first 10-4A win and push themselves back into the playoff race, but instead fell to 0-4.

Poteet trailed by double digits after the first quarter but got back to within 22-16 at halftime. Creekview reestablished control in the second half, though, steadily pulling away for the win.

Shyari Cheathem shouldered the scoring load for the Pirates with 25 points but no other player had more than four.

The 10-4A teams have little time to rest, as they will return to the court on Saturday.

West Mesquite has another huge contest as it hosts co-leader Carrollton Newman Smith. If the Wranglers come up short, they would fall two games off the 10-4A lead.

Poteet also has a big opportunity as it takes on Terrell in a battle of winless teams. The winner of this contest will not only earn its first district victory, but also be right back in the postseason mix.
