Return to form: Lady Eagles snap skid with blowout win at Lewisville

Published: Wednesday, December 19, 2012 12:11 PM CST
The Allen girls basketball team entered Friday's matchup against Lewisville in the midst of something the team had yet to experience this season: a losing streak.

Failing to win their past three games, the Lady Eagles not only got off the schneid Friday but did so in emphatic fashion with a 60-35 decision over the Lady Farmers.

"It was good for us to play and score a little bit better," said Sean Weibling, Allen head coach. "Defensively, we were a little bit stronger as well. It was just good to get back in the flow of things and get back to doing things that we do well."

That much was evident in the first half, when the Lady Eagles buried Lewisville in a 32-19 hole by halftime after pouring in 16 points in each of the first two quarters. Allen didn't allow much comfort on defensive either, limiting Lewisville to just six points in the second quarter.

"I think we dictated the tempo a bit more," Weibling said. "We pushed the tempo more than we did against Marcus (a 48-35 loss) or Flower Mound (a 57-41 loss). All three of those teams are built around slowing the tempo down and running half-court sets, and our transition offense and defense was a bit better against Lewisville."

The Lady Eagles produced double-digit outputs in all four quarters -- something the team failed to do during its losing skid -- and did so behind points from nine players.

"A lot of kids played a lot of minutes," Weibling said. "We did jump on them early and started playing a lot of subs early in the first quarter, but we distributed the ball well and we had some kids hit some big 3s in both halves."

Two of Allen's primary scorers -- juniors Anna Horowitz and Ericka May -- combined for just seven points, with senior Rachel Piles leading the charge at 13, followed by nine from sophomore McKenzie Martin and eight from senior Kelsey Paul. The victory partially cured a headache to begin the month after setbacks against the Lady Jaguars, Lady Marauders and Mesquite Horn (a 60-59 overtime loss).

"We knew this month was going to be a tough one for us," Weibling said. "I think we approached it the right way. Obviously, we didn't want to lose those games but we feel like this is preparing us well for district."

The Lady Eagles next take the floor Friday for a 7 p.m. home tilt against Coppell, setting the table for a trip north from Dec. 27-29 when Allen competes in Oklahoma for the Ardmore Holiday Festival Tournament.

"We're going to see some teams from that tournament that shoot the ball real well and are very fundamental in the half court," Weibling said. "There's some good size there too, which will be key for us with how we defend that."

Allen opens the event at 12:20 p.m. Thursday against Durant in what Weibling described as a weekend for team building and furthering chemistry off the court.

"We're not taking them on any wild goose chases or anything like that," he said. "We're going to enjoy the process and have a good time while we're down there."
