Sunnyvale lands 20 players on all-district football team

Published: Wednesday, December 19, 2012 1:55 AM CST
The Sunnyvale football program is making strides toward where it wants to be.

And although the Raiders' 7-3 record was not enough to propel them into the playoffs for the first time in school history, others are taking notice how far they have come, as evidenced by 20 players being selected to the 6-2A all-district football team.

Sunnyvale had nine players selected to the first team, including six on the defensive side of the ball.

And in a bright sign for the future, 13 of the Raiders' honorees will be returning next season.

Among that group is junior wide receiver Josh Quinn, who was named to the first team at wide receiver.

Quinn, last year's district newcomer of the year, caught 58 passes for 1,004 yards, an average of better than 17 yards per reception, with a team-best 16 touchdowns.

Quinn was joined on the first-team offense by offensive lineman Mustafa Raba, who helped Sunnyvale average 26.9 points per game and score for than 30 five times.

The defense, which allowed 21 points per game and held its opponents to 20 points or less on seven occasions, was led up front by junior lineman Mohammed Al Rousan.

At linebacker, seniors Godswill Nweke and Devin DeLeon, along with junior Casey Crenshaw, made the first team, while senior corner back Steven Kirven and junior safety Demetrius Gray were also recognized.

Crenshaw was also a first-team selection at both kicker and punter.

The second-team offense featured sophomore running back Abdul Khalaf, who rushed for 547 yards and five touchdowns, wide receiver Steven Kirven, who had 25 catches for 268 yards, and offensive lineman Ryan Moss.

Defensively, junior lineman Brandon DeLeon, sophomore linebacker Connor Mears, senior cornerback Tyler Gooch and sophomore safety Joey Rosato were named to the second team.

Among the honorable mention selections were junior quarterback Ryan Cottingame, who threw for more than 2,000 yards and 19 touchdowns, junior wide receiver Wes Phillips and sophomore linemen Caleb Beard and MIchael Sheveland on offense.

On the defensive side, senior lineman Chandler Gunnels, sophomore linebacker Hunter Allen and sophomore cornerback Cade Torres received honorable mention recognition.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Sunnyvale is off to a flying start to the District 12-2A season. The Raiders posted a pair of 20-point victories this past week to improve to 3-0 in district play and 12-3 overall.

Farmersville was the latest victim as Sunnyvale jumped out quicky and never looked back en route to a 56-36 victory on Tuesday.

The Raiders led by six after one quarter and then used a 15-3 run in the second to blow the game open with a 25-7 halftime lead.

Farmersville had no answer for Sheridan Lewis, who poured in a game-high 24 points. Caila Sims scored 11 points, while Abby Duck added six.

It was a similar story on Friday, as Sunnyvale was never threatened in a 45-25 win over Pilot Point.

The Raiders did not allow a point in the opening quarter and used a 13-3 spurt in the second to take a 24-3 lead at halftime.

Grace Goodhart led a balanced scoring effort with 13 points, with Sims and Andi Morgan adding 12 and nine points, respectively.

Sunnyvale will hit the road to play at Van Alstyne on Friday before taking a break early next week for the Christmas holiday.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Sunnyvale had one bad quarter, but that was all it took on Tuesday as Farmersville pulled out a 52-44 victory in the District 12-2A opener for both teams.

The game was close throughout the first half, with the Raiders trailing 28-24 at the break.

But Sunnyvale (8-6) managed only three points in the third quarter, allowing the deficit to swell to double figures and despite a stronger performance in the fourth, they were unable to come back.

The Raiders had a balanced scoring effort with eight different players tallying points, led by Josh Quinn and Thomas Wendt with nine and Stephen Kirven with seven.

That even effort was not enough to overcome Farmersville's J'Tyus Cooper, who poured in a game-high 33 points.

Sunnyvale has one more game before the Christmas holiday when it takes on Van Alstyne on Friday.
