Sunnyvale girls basketball team remains undefeated

Published: Friday, December 28, 2012 10:05 PM CST
To say the Sunnyvale girls basketball team has not broken a sweat in District 12-2A play thus far would be a stretch.

But not much of one.

The Raiders captured their fourth consecutive double-digit victory on Friday as they took care of Van Alstyne in a 48-35 victory.

Sunnyvale improved to 4-0 in district play and 13-3 overall heading into the Christmas break.

They have now won all four district games by an average of 18 points per game.

The Raiders jumped out early with an 11-5 run to take the advantage. Van Alstyne hung around and trailed only 37-30 heading to the fourth quarter, but Sunnyvale used another 11-5 spurt to close it out.

Sheridan Lewis scored 14 points and Grace Goodhart added 13 for the Raiders.

Sunnyvale will host the Sunnyvale Tournament on Thursday through Saturday before returning to district play on Jan. 4 to host Leonard.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Sunnyvale bounced back from a district-opening loss to Farmersville with a 54-50 victory over Van Alstyne on Friday.

The Raiders, who are 8-6 overall, improve to 1-1 in District 12-2A play.

Sunnyvale got off to a fast start in opening a 14-5 lead after one quarter, but Van Alstyne refued to go away, climbing back to within 41-38 heading to the fourth quarter.

It remained tight from there, but the Raiders were able to do enough in the fourth quarter to hold on.

Sunnyvale will now get a nice break during the Christmas holidays before returning to district action to face Leonard on Jan. 4.

FOOTBALL

A trio of Sunnyvale football players were recognized on the Class 2A all-state team.

Casey Crenshaw was named as a first-team all-state kicker. Josh Quinn, a wide receiver, and Godswill Nweke, a linebacker, received all-state honorable mention recognition.
