12-5A GIRLS BASKETBALL: Jaguars topple Skeeters for first district win

Horn was coming off a tough district-opening loss to Rockwall and the last thing it wanted to do was fall into an 0-2 hole on Friday.
But the Jaguars had to take on a Mesquite team that has been playing well of late, including a victory in its 11-5A opener.
It was a game of runs by both teams but in the end, Horn was able to emerge with a 46-41 victory.
Horn trailed early, but reeled off a 17-5 run in the second quarter to take a 25-15 lead into halftime.
Mesquite was not going away, as it countered with a 15-6 spurt to close to within a point heading to the fourth quarter.
It remained close during the final eight minutes, but the Jaguars were able to hold on down the stretch to earn a key district win.
Jada Underwood scored 16 points while Kristina Smith and Victoria Youman each added 10 for Horn. Brianna Williams had a game-high 18 points and Viershanie Latham scored 10 for the Skeeters.
North Mesquite had only four victories on the season, but one of those was in the district opener, leaving them feeling confident going into Friday's clash with Tyler Lee.
But the Red Raiders took the lead from the start and never relinquished it in a 51-43 victory.
The Stallions trailed by only two after one quarter but that deficit swelled to 31-22 at halftime.
North Mesquite made a late charge with a 9-4 run in the fourth quarter but it was not enough.
Taylor Carraway had 12 points and Racheal Malone added eight to pace the offense.
