Chargers rally past Fort Worth Christian to move on to state semifinals
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
Dallas Christian entered Saturday's match-up with Fort Worth Christian as a prohibitive favorite, and for good reason.
The Chargers routed FWC in the first meeting, 41-7 and have been on a roll ever since.
Yet Fort Worth Christian had designs on writing their own story as they jumped to a 20-0 lead early in the second quarter.
The Chargers (12-0) move on to the state semifinals where they will face Midland Christian on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Shotwell Stadium in Abilene.
Fort Worth Christian took early command, using touchdown runs from Chase Hamilton, Caleb Davis and Jared Taylor to shock Dallas Christian in opening a 20-0 lead.
The Chargers grabbed momentum from that point, as Alex Craig threw a 56-yard touchdown pass to Justis Nelson and a 28-yard scoring strike to Dominique Weaver to close to within 20-14 at halftime.
Dallas Christian took its first lead of the game in the third quarter when Craig hooked up with Nelson on a 23-yard touchdown pass to take a 21-20 lead.
It remained close until late, when D'Andre Cannon broke free for a 27-yard touchdown run with less than two minutes left to add some needed insurance as the Chargers kept their hopes of a ninth state championship alive.
