Little Elm ISD moving forward on STEM Academy

Published: Thursday, December 13, 2012 12:54 PM CST
Little Elm ISD took the next step toward the construction of the $15 million Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) Academy it plans to open next year on Monday. The school board approved a new position, director of facilities and planning, that would oversee the construction of the school.

The director of facilities and planning will also be responsible for facility maintenance, supervising other construction projects and major renovations, researching and recommending potential school sites, and additional duties, according to a job posting on the district's website. The position will pay a salary between $84,000 and $115,000.

The district hopes to have someone hired by February.

The hiring of a new employee was one of three options presented to the school board at a board meeting Monday. The other options were hiring an outside firm or creating an interlocal agreement with another school district to use their personal, said Linda Engle, district CFO.

According to Engle, a main reason the district selected an in-house option was expected future growth and the associated need for further construction projects.

The district hopes to break ground on the STEM Academy during the summer and to open the school in August 2015. The project was approved earlier this year and will be located in The Tribute, a 1,500-acre mater-planned community in The Colony.

The school will serve grades K-8 and focus on math, science and other technical fields. The district hopes to populate the school with an even mixture of kids who live near the school and those from other areas of its school zone. All students within the district will be able to apply to attend the school.

“Business and industry are seeking more graduates who are focused in those areas,” said Julie Zwahr, director of communications for Little Elm ISD. “We're trying to encourage more students to focus on science and technology.”

The school will be located on a 32-acre site along Lebanon Road the district bought in 2002.
