Regroup: Lady Broncos poised to come back stronger from injuries

Published: Friday, December 21, 2012 8:28 PM CST
Some basketball teams are weary of the holiday break, fearing rust or inconsistency will set in. The nine-day break, however, is just what the McKinney Boyd Lady Broncos needed.

The Broncos (8-10) are currently nursing injuries to several key players.

"We got a lot of injuries right now," said Rochelle Vaughn, Boyd head coach. "We're just trying to get everybody healthy, get everybody back on the same page. It's a good break for us to mentally recharge."

Senior forward Micaela Gonzalez, sophomore forward Jordan Brightwell and junior guard Natalie Maina have all missed several games and are all still missing from action due to different injuries.

"Those are the main three that have been hurt," Vaughn said. "[Brightwell] has a concussion, Micaela has a high ankle sprain and Natalie has a fractured ankle."

Gonzalez, Brightwell and Maina suffered their injuries at various points over the last few weeks.

"At one point they all were starting," Vaughn said. "We haven't had a consistent starting lineup two games in a row. It's changed a lot."

Vaughn is hoping to get her three starters back in time for their district opener at home against Plano West on Jan 4.

"We're hoping everybody gets back by then [Jan. 4]," she said. "That's the most optimistic outlook."

The Lady Broncos have had to rely heavily on their younger bench players to fill the void.

"We're trying to bring some young players along," Vaughn said. "Regardless of what we have we have to play what we have. We need everyone to step up."

The injuries are particularly troubling given that Vaughn felt the Lady Broncos were well on their way to continued improvement.

"At the start of the year we were rolling pretty well, then in the last several weeks the injuries hit," she said. "Hopefully we can get back to where we were in our development before the injuries hit us."

While the injuries may have caused momentary setbacks in some areas, they haven't halted the entirety of the team's overall development, something Vaughn is encouraged by.

"We're gaining more confidence," she said. "I think we're getting better at understanding our roles and what each person brings to our team and what we have to do to be successful. It's starting to click."

Boyd returns to action Dec. 27 in the Mansfield Rotary Tournament. Their next game after the tournament will be their Jan. 4 district opener, which Vaughn hopes will see the team return to form at full strength.

"When we're all together we can play pretty good defense," she said. "When we're all together, our core group has great chemistry. They understand each other's strengths and weaknesses and we're a much better team when we're all together."
