11-5A BOYS TOURNAMENT ROUNDUP: Sachse comes up short in third-place game at Dallas ISD Tournament

Published: Sunday, December 30, 2012 7:12 PM CST
Sachse got plenty of work in last week at the Dallas ISD Coca-Cola Tournament.

And while it did not end the way the Mustangs hoped with a pair of losses, including a 65-57 setback to Carter in the third-place game on Saturday, they showed something by holding their own in one of the toughest fields of any tournament in the state.

Sachse might of entered the game as the underdog against state-ranked Carter, but it did not back down in opening a 13-6 lead early on.

The Cowboys answered, though, to take a 24-22 lead into halftime. The game remained close, but despite 14 points from James Mayden and 10 each from A.J. Goss and Michael Olivares, they were unable to make up the gap in the second half.

Sachse had been coming off a 72-56 loss to South Grand Prairie in the semifinals of the winner's bracket.

The Mustangs hung tough for a half, trailing only 37-36, but the Warriors were too much in the second half. Goss had 14 points and Tyrique Edwards added 10.

Sachse had made it through the first three rounds safely.

In the opener on Thursday, the Mustangs took care of Wylie in a 59-41 victory. They trailed by three at halftime but outscored the Pirates 41-20 during the final two quarters. Marlo Johnson scored 16 points and Josh Robertson added 12.

Sachse did not have any players in double figures in its second-round game against Conrad, but used a balanced effort and big runs in the first and third quarters to post a 51-37 victory.

In the quarterfinals, the Mustangs rallied from a big early deficit and behind 14 points from Johnson and 13 from Goss, they were able to hold off Woodrow Wilson in a 49-48 win.

Sachse will go back to work in 11-5A this week facing Garland on the road on Wednesday. After a non-district game against Plano East on Saturday, they will host South Garland on Tuesday.

ROWLETT

Rowlett knew its perfect season would likely come to an end at some point.

And when it was to happen, the Eagles would much rather it come during tournament action than in district play, or even worse, in the playoffs.

There will be no more reason for the team to even think about it anymore, though, as Rowlett's 14-game winning streak to start the season came to an end on Thursday in a 61-60 loss to Arlington Martin.

The game remained tight from the opening tip, with Rowlett trailing for much of the contest, but by a very small margin.

The Eagles were able to take the lead late in the fourth quarter, but Martin had an answer and was able to hold on for the one-point victory. Jeffrey Carroll scored 29 points and Nathan Hawkins added 22 for Rowlett.

On Friday, the Eagles ran into the type of streak they were hoping to avoid when they dropped their second consecutive game in a 61-52 loss to Coppell.

Despite 21 points from Carroll, the rest of the offense was unable to get untracked, as the Cowboys took a 25-20 halftime lead and pulled away from there.

Rowlett will look to put those setbacks behind it when it returns to 11-5A play this week when it hosts South Garland on Wednesday, plays on the road at Naaman Forest on Saturday and then has a home game against North Garland on Tuesday.
