LHS, MHS FFA hold successful community night

Published: Friday, November 9, 2012 3:13 PM CST
On Oct. 29, the Lewisville and Marcus High School Future Farmers of America (FFA) opened the gates to their home at the Lewisville ISD Chester Boyd Agriculture Center for a community night.

"We want to show the community that FFA isn't just about raising animals," LHS agriculture teachers Justin Browne and Jennifer Keel said. "There are more than 100 LHS and MHS students who participate in FFA and less than half of them raise animals as part of their participation in FFA. The others take part in our leadership, public speaking and judging programs. Many people do not know about that side of FFA."

Recently, nine LISD student representatives travelled to the organization's national convention to expand their knowledge on topics such as this in hopes bring their knowledge home to help expand LISD's FFA program.

"FFA is about growing responsible leaders," Browne and Keel said. "It's something every student should take part in to help make their futures successful."

FFA members greeted guests during the event to introduce them to FFA, discuss all facets of the program and provide tours of the barns where animals such as heifers, steers, goats, and pigs are raised for show. LISD Superintendent Dr. Stephen Waddell, members of the board of trustees and leadership team all attended to show their support for the program. Career and technology education director Adrian Moreno manned the grill to serve complimentary hotdogs and hamburgers to all in attendance.

According to ffa.org, "Future Farmers of America was founded by a group of young farmers back in 1928. Their mission was to prepare future generations for the challenges of feeding a growing population. They taught us that agriculture is more than planting and harvesting - it's a science, it's a business and it's an art. FFA continues to help the next generation rise up to meet those challenges by helping its members to develop their own unique talents and explore their interests in a broad range of career pathways. So today, we are still the Future Farmers of America. But, we are the Future Biologists, Future Chemists, Future Veterinarians, Future Engineers and Future Entrepreneurs of America, too."
