Top Sunnyvale Sports Story of 2012: Raider baseball team makes history with run to regional championship game
By DEVIN HASSON, dhasson@starlocalnews.com
In a short period of time, the Sunnyvale baseball program has built a solid reputation for itself.
The Raiders have put together a string of playoff appearances, and last season, took it to the next level in making it to within a game of the state tournament.
Tim Arden, the 13-2A coach of the year, had plenty of reasons for high hopes with a good mix of proven veterans and talented youngsters.
Led by most valuable player Zach Metzger, offensive player of the year Brock Taylor, defensive player of the year Mason Goodin, pitcher of the year Jake Wilcox, newcomer of the year Joey Rosato, as well as first-teamers Will Moss, Wesley Phillips, Connor Nash and Devin DeLeon, the Raiders rolled to an undefeated district championship season.
But Sunnyvale was just getting warmed up.
After a bye in the opening round, Sunnyvale embarked on its longest playoff journey in school history, earning sweeps over Franklin (11-0, 8-0), Corsicana Mildred (15-3, 11-0) and Gunter (4-0, 6-10, 14-4) to make it to the regional championship game for the first time.
The Raiders nearly extended their run to the state tournament in Austin, but fell just short against eventual state champion Brock with a narrow 3-2 loss in the regional final game.
