10-4A BOYS BASKETBALL: Poteet opens with huge win over Highland Park
Published: Friday, December 28, 2012 10:05 PM CST
It has been a rough start to the season for Poteet.
The Pirates were missing several valuable players, but for good reason, as they pull double duty as members of the football team that made a run to the Class 4A Division II Region II championship game.
But with football season over, Poteet is getting back to full strength and that showed on Friday in the 10-4A opener as they took down one of the district favorites, Highland Park, in a 47-40 victory.
The game was close throughout, with the Pirates trailing early but coming back to take a 23-21 halftime lead.
The Scots held Poteet to just five points in the third quarter to regain the advantage, but the Pirates closed the game with a 19-10 run to pick up a huge win.
Verkedric Vaughns led Poteet with 18 points, while Nathaniel Gaines and Raffaele Gaines added 13 and 11 points, respectively.
West Mesquite, another of the district favorites, took care of business, although it got a little too close for comfort at the end, in a 66-62 victory over North Forney.
The Wranglers were in control for much of the game.
They jumped to a 19-6 lead after one quarter and scored 27 points in the third quarter to push the advantage to 60-34 through three quarters.
With the starters on the bench, North Forney staged a furious comeback, outscoring West Mesquite 28-6 in the fourth quarter, but the Wranglers were able to hang on.
Braylon Rayson scored 16 points to lead a quintet of West Mesquite players in double figures.
The 10-4A teams will compete in holiday tournaments this weekend before returning to 10-4A play next week.
